Introduction

Lighting is a crucial aspect of the physical environment that plays a significant role in work comfort. Inadequate lighting can lead to eye fatigue, which is a serious concern in the workplace. This research aims to investigate the relationship between lighting and eye fatigue in workers at PT. Pioneer Fishing Indonesia Tanjung Morawa in 2019. The study employed an analytic survey with a cross-sectional approach to measure lighting and eye fatigue in workers.

Methodology

The population studied consisted of all workers in the company, totaling 146 people. A sample of 15 permanent workers involved in the auto formation and forging process was taken. Data collection was carried out using a lighting gauge, namely Lux meter and Flicker Fusion method. The results showed that poor lighting intensity, which is below 300 lux, occurred at 13 measurement points (86.7%), while good lighting intensity (≥ 300 lux) was only found at 2 points (13.3%). Of the total workers studied, 12 people (80.0%) experienced eye fatigue, while 3 people (20.0%) did not feel the fatigue.

Analysis of Lighting and Eye Fatigue Relationship

The finding indicates that the quality of lighting at the workplace of PT. Pioneer Fishing Indonesia Tanjung Morawa still needs to be improved. Inadequate lighting can result in eye fatigue, which can affect the long-term productivity and health of workers. Workers who experience high-risk eye fatigue are more likely to experience other health problems, such as more serious vision problems. The Chi-Square statistical test revealed a significant relationship between lighting intensity and eye fatigue among workers, with a value of P = 0.029.

Recommendations

One of the recommendations for the company is to improve the quality of lighting by turning on the lights of the room to the maximum while working and adjusting the position of the lamp so that the lighting is evenly distributed throughout the work area. In addition, companies can also consider the use of LED lights that are more efficient and comfortable for the eyes. On the other hand, workers are advised to relax their eyes at least 5-10 minutes every working hour. Activities such as looking in a long direction, closing their eyes, or doing simple eye movements can help relieve tensions caused by recurring work activities.

Conclusion

From the results of the research and analysis conducted, it can be concluded that there is a significant relationship between the intensity of lighting and eye fatigue in workers at PT. Pioneer Fishing Indonesia Tanjung Morawa. Therefore, both companies and workers need to work together in creating a better work environment, which not only focuses on production efficiency but also on the health and comfort of workers. Through the improvement of the lighting system and the application of relaxation steps, it is expected that the quality of work and health of workers can improve significantly.
