Introduction

This study aims to explore the effect of loan to deposit ratio (LDR), ratio of operating expenses to operating income (BOPO), and capital structure on banking profitability, specifically in the category of books 3 and book 4. The period of analysis is between 2014 to 2018, a time when there was a decline trend in profitability in these banks.

The dependent variable was ROA, while LDR, BOPO, and capital structure (measured by the debt to equity ratio) were the independent variables.

Results

The results of the analysis showed that the loan to deposit ratio had no significant effect on bank profitability. This indicates that although LDR is important in liquidity management, it is not always directly related to increased profitability. Meanwhile, BOPO and capital structure show a significant negative effect on profitability. That is, the higher the operating burden compared to operating income, the lower the level of bank profitability. Likewise, with a higher capital structure, it can indicate a greater risk, which in turn affects the financial performance of the bank.

Firstly, the results suggest that banks need to focus on optimizing their operational management and capital structure to improve profitability. This study has several limitations that need to be acknowledged. Firstly, the study only focused on the category of books 3 and book 4, which may not be representative of the entire banking industry in Indonesia. Secondly, the study used a quantitative approach, which may not capture the nuances of the banking industry. Finally, the study only examined the effect of LDR, BOPO, and capital structure on banking profitability, and did not consider other factors that may influence profitability.
