Introduction

The growth of high-quality cocoa seeds is crucial for achieving high cocoa production. Materials and Methods

This study was conducted on the experimental land of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra, Medan, which is located at an altitude of about 32 meters above sea level. The study was conducted from November 2017 to January 2018. A randomized factorial group was used consisting of two factors: cocoa skin compost and oil palm liquid waste. The first factor was cocoa skin compost with variations of doses of 0 g, 100 g, 200 g, and 300 g per polybag. The second factor was oil palm liquid waste with variations of 0 ml, 75 ml, and 150 ml per application. Each treatment was applied 10 times.

Results

The results of this study showed that the provision of 100 g cocoa skin compost gave the best results in terms of stem diameter, wet wet weight, and dry weight of the canopy. In addition, without the administration of liquid waste produced a higher number of leaves, as well as the highest wet and dry weight of the canopy. However, the interaction between the two treatments did not show a significant effect on all measured parameters.

Discussion

The results of this study suggest that the use of cocoa skin compost has a clear positive impact on the growth of cocoa seeds. Giving 100 g compost of cocoa skin is considered optimal, providing sufficient nutrition to support the growth of seeds. This may be caused by the nutrient content contained in compost which can increase the growth of roots and canopies.

On the other hand, oil palm liquid waste, although it has the potential as fertilizer, does not provide a significant effect in this study, especially when used together with cocoa skin compost. Possibly, the nutritional levels in the waste are not balanced or can affect the soil pH, so that it does not support the growth of cocoa seeds. Therefore, the use of oil palm liquid waste should be carefully considered and adjusted to the specific needs of cocoa plants.

Conclusion

The implementation of the results of this study is important to improve the efficiency of cocoa production. Farmers are advised to utilize cocoa skin compost as a source of nutrition for cocoa seeds, while the use of oil palm liquid waste needs to be done with a more careful dose. Thus, these steps can help farmers improve the quality of seeds and in turn improve the overall cocoa yield.
