Analysis of Dust Levels and Complaints of Respiratory Channels in Furniture Industrial Workers in Medan Polonia District, Medan City in 2019

Introduction

The furniture industry is one of the significant sources of air pollution, where the wood dust produced can have a negative impact on the respiratory tract of its workers. Air pollution is a major concern in many industries, including the furniture industry, where workers are exposed to various types of dust, including wood dust, which can cause respiratory problems. The impact of dust on the respiratory tract can be severe, and it is essential to analyze the dust content and complaints of respiratory tract in furniture industry workers to understand the extent of the problem.

Background

The furniture industry is a significant contributor to the economy of Medan City, and it employs a large number of workers. However, the industry is also known to produce a significant amount of dust, which can have a negative impact on the health of workers. Some factors that can cause disorders of the respiratory tract due to dust include particle size, shape, concentration, and length of exposure. Respiratory problems caused by dust exposure can range from mild symptoms such as sneezing and coughing to more severe conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Methodology

This study aims to analyze dust content and complaints of respiratory tract in furniture industry workers in Medan Polonia District. Research conducted is descriptive with a quantitative approach to take place from January to December 2019. The population in this study covers all workers in five furniture industries totaling 65 people. From this population, a sample of 31 people was taken using the purposive sampling method, namely workers who did not smoke. The research data was obtained through the measurement of dust content and questionnaires designed to determine the complaints of the respiratory tract of the workers.

Data Analysis

Data analysis is carried out univariate and cross tabulation. The results showed that dust content in five furniture industries in Medan Polonia District did not exceed the specified threshold value. Dust content (PM10) recorded ranging from 0.2 to 3.44 μg/nm³, while dust content (PM2.5) ranges from 0.16 to 0.57 μg/nm³. Although the dust content is still within safe limits, research found that 24 workers or 77.4% of the total sample experienced respiratory tract complaints. Of this amount, 18 workers reported experiencing a slight or cold nasal symptoms, which are the most common complaints among workers.

Results

The results of this study show that despite the dust content being within safe limits, a significant number of workers experienced respiratory tract complaints. This suggests that the impact of dust on the health of workers is still a concern, even when the dust content is within safe limits. The most common complaints among workers were slight or cold nasal symptoms, which can be a sign of a more serious respiratory problem if left untreated.

This study has several limitations that should be noted. Firstly, the sample size was relatively small, which may limit the generalizability of the results. Secondly, the study only analyzed dust content and complaints of respiratory tract in furniture industry workers in Medan Polonia District, and may not be representative of workers in other industries or locations. Finally, the study only measured dust content and complaints of respiratory tract, and did not investigate other potential health risks associated with exposure to dust in the workplace.
