Introduction

In recent years, the demand for sustainable and efficient agricultural practices has increased, particularly in regions with challenging soil conditions. This study aims to investigate the adaptation of several sorghum plant varieties (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench.) in Ultisol soil media given additional cocopeat.

Background

Sorghum is a drought-tolerant crop that is widely grown in tropical regions. It is an excellent crop for small-scale farmers, as it requires minimal inputs and can thrive in poor soil conditions. Research Methodology

This study employed a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with two factors: the type of planting media and the sorghum variety tested. The four types of planting media used were:

Ultisol: A treatment with no cocopeat added.
Ultisol + Cocopeat 1 Kg: A treatment with 1 kg of cocopeat added to the Ultisol soil.
Ultisol + Cocopeat 2 Kg: A treatment with 2 kg of cocopeat added to the Ultisol soil.

The four sorghum varieties tested were:

Kawali: A local variety known for its high yield potential.
Samurai 1: A high-yielding variety developed for tropical regions.
Samurai 2: A variety known for its drought tolerance.
Variety 1: An unknown variety used as a control.

The experiment was conducted in the Greenhouse of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra, Medan, from April 2019 to January 2020. The data obtained from this study were analyzed using the analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by the DMRT test to determine the significant differences between treatments.

Research Results

The results of the analysis showed that there were significant differences in vegetative growth, such as plant height, number of leaves, and stem diameter, and root morphology, including root volume, between various sorghum varieties planted in Ultisol soil media given cocopeat.

From the results of the study, it was revealed that Ultisol soil media given cocopeat had a positive effect on vegetative growth, with an increase in stem diameter and significant number of leaves compared to media without cocopeat. In addition, there is a strong influence on root morphology, especially the length of the root, which is an important indicator in the absorption of nutrition and plant resistance to soil conditions.

Additional Analysis

The addition of cocopeat to the Ultisol soil provides a better condition for the growth of sorghum roots. Cocopeat is known to have the ability to increase the capacity to hold water and soil aeration, which is very important for plant growth. In addition, cocopeat can also increase the content of organic matter in the soil, thereby increasing soil fertility and health.

The interaction between sorghum varieties and the type of planting media used also shows that some varieties are superior to others in terms of vegetative growth. For example, samurai 1 varieties show better growth than other varieties in Ultisol soil media which are given 2 kg of cocopeat, this shows the potential for certain varieties to be planted in Ultisol soil which often has a low pH and soil texture that is not optimal for plant growth.

Conclusion

This study provides valuable insight into the adaptation of sorghum varieties in Ultisol soil media enriched with cocopeat. The results obtained not only show the difference in performance between varieties, but also the potential for cocopeat use as soil amendments to increase sorghum growth. This finding can be a reference for farmers and researchers in choosing the right sorghum varieties and effective cultivation techniques to increase agricultural productivity in Ultisol land.
