Background of the Study

The Anjasmoro and Grobogan varieties of soybeans are two popular cultivars in Indonesia, known for their high yield and disease resistance. However, each variety has its limitations, and crossing them may lead to the creation of a new variety with improved characteristics. The research was conducted by Diana Sofiah Hanafiah and Hot Setiado at the Plastic House of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra. The study employed the Hand Pollination method with a one-way cross design, focusing on the combination of Anjasmoro × Grobogan.

Data Collection and Analysis

Data collected during the study was processed using the SPSS program to determine the standard deviation of data. The observations show that soybean flower pollen has a 100% fertility rate, which is a strong indication that the flower is capable of producing seeds. The number of 1 seeded pods produced is 6, 2 seed pods are 7, and 1 seed pods are 1, while there are 7 empty pods. This data provides valuable insights into the success rate of the cross between the two soybean varieties.

Hand Pollination Method

The Hand Pollination method was used to facilitate the cross between the Anjasmoro and Grobogan varieties. This method involves manually transferring pollen from the anther of one plant to the stigma of another plant. The one-way cross design was employed to ensure that the pollen from the Anjasmoro variety was used to pollinate the Grobogan variety.

Results and Discussion

Weight of Seeds

One interesting thing from the results of this study is the weight of 10 seeds resulting from a smaller cross compared to the weight of the seeds of female elders. This may be caused by genetic factors that affect the development of seeds or may also be due to differences in environmental conditions during growth. The weight of seeds is an important characteristic in soybean breeding, as it affects the yield and quality of the crop.

Comparison of Anjasmoro and Grobogan Varieties

From the observed characteristics, Anjasmoro varieties show excellence compared to Grobogan in certain aspects. This study provides valuable insight for the development of better soybean varieties through crossing techniques. With the selection of appropriate varieties and good breeding techniques, it is expected that the soybeans produced have better potential in terms of results and resistance to pests and diseases.

The cross between Anjasmoro and Grobogan varieties can be used as one of the first steps in the formation of the expected soybean genetic population. Although there are challenges in achieving 100% success in crossing, the results of this study are a strong basis for further development. Innovation in the breeding of soybean plants is needed to meet market demand that continues to increase, while improving the quality and quantity of soybean production in Indonesia.
