The Role of Psychological Distress on the Tendency of Prosocial Hospital Nurses in the City of Medan and Surrounding Areas in the Pandemi Covid-19

Introduction

The Pandemi Covid-19 has brought various challenges for health workers, especially nurses who are at the front guard. They often experience high psychological pressure, or what is known as psychological distress, due to increased workload and the risk of exposure to the virus. This study aims to understand the influence of psychological distress on the tendency of the prosocial behavior of nurses in the city of Medan and surrounding areas during the Pandemic period.

Understanding Psychological Distress and Prosocial Behavior

In this context, psychological distress is a condition that affects a person's mental and emotional health, which can cause stress. Stress experienced by nurses can adversely affect their physical and psychological health, which in turn can affect the way they interact and behave in the work environment. Prosocial behavior, on the other hand, refers to actions that benefit others, which in this context include attention, empathy, and assistance given by nurses to patients and coworkers.

Methodology

This research was conducted using quantitative methods that involve correlation data analysis. The research subject totaled 165 people, chosen through the accidental sampling technique. The measuring instrument used in this study consists of the Covid-19 Peritraumatic Distress Index (CPDI) scale to measure the psychological distress and the Prosocialness Scale for Adults scale to assess the tendency of prosocial behavior.

Results

The results showed that there was no negative relationship between psychological distress and the tendency of prosocial behavior among nurses. This means that although nurses experience high psychological distress levels, this does not significantly reduce their ability to act prosocial. Conversely, additional results also show that nurses in the city of Medan have a psychological distress and high prosocial behavior.

Further Analysis

Further analysis shows that even though nurses experience severe stress, their motivation to help patients and provide support to colleagues remains strong. This reflects that factors such as intrinsic motivation and empathy can play an important role in encouraging prosocial behavior, even in the midst of challenging conditions.

Thus, this study provides new insights on the complexity of the relationship between psychological distress and prosocial behavior. For further research, it is important to pay attention to other factors that can affect prosocial behavior, such as psychological welfare and empathy abilities. This is important so that the right intervention can be developed to support the mental and emotional health of nurses, as well as improving the quality of health services in difficult times such as Pandemic.

In facing challenges like this, a better understanding of what motivates nurses to remain prosocial even though in difficult circumstances is very important. By providing the necessary support, we can ensure that they can still provide optimal treatment to patients, while maintaining their own mental health.
