Introduction

In today's fast-paced and highly competitive business environment, companies are constantly seeking ways to increase their value and stay ahead of the competition. One key factor that has been identified as crucial to a company's success is its intellectual capital. Intellectual capital refers to the intangible assets possessed by a company, including knowledge, innovation, and the ability of human resources. In the context of banking, intellectual capital can take the form of employee expertise, information systems, and organizational culture that supports operational innovation and efficiency. This study aims to analyze the effect of intellectual capital on company value using financial performance as an intervening variable in banking companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) in the 2013 to 2015 period.

Understanding of Intellectual Capital

Intellectual capital is an intangible asset possessed by a company and includes knowledge, innovation, and the ability of human resources. In the context of banking, intellectual capital can be in the form of employee expertise, information systems, and organizational culture that supports operational innovation and efficiency. Given the very competitive banking industry, the good managing of intellectual capital is one of the keys to success for companies to win competition in the market. Intellectual capital can be categorized into three main components: human capital, structural capital, and relational capital. Human capital refers to the skills, knowledge, and experience of an organization's employees. Structural capital refers to the systems, processes, and technology used by an organization to create and deliver value. Relational capital refers to the relationships and networks that an organization has with its customers, suppliers, and partners.

Financial Performance as an Intervening Variable

Financial performance includes various aspects such as profitability, liquidity, and operational efficiency of the company. In this analysis, financial performance functions as a mediator that connects the influence of intellectual capital on company value. That is, an increase in intellectual capital will lead to an increase in financial performance, which in turn will contribute to an increase in company value. Therefore, company management needs to understand and optimize intellectual capital in order to achieve better financial performance and higher company value. Financial performance is a critical factor in determining a company's value, as it reflects the company's ability to generate profits and create value for its shareholders.

Methodology

This study used a quantitative approach to analyze the effect of intellectual capital on company value using financial performance as an intervening variable. The population of this study consisted of 38 banking companies listed on the IDX in the 2013 to 2015 period. The sample used consisted of 18 companies observed for three years. The data was collected from various sources, including annual reports, financial statements, and other relevant documents. The analysis was conducted using regression analysis to examine the relationship between intellectual capital, financial performance, and company value.

Results

The results of this study showed that intellectual capital had a positive and significant influence on financial performance. This is proven through the t-test in the substructure I equation, which indicates that an increase in intellectual capital contributes to improvement in the company's financial performance. Furthermore, in the substructure II equation, the results of the T-test also confirmed that both intellectual capital and financial performance have a positive and significant effect on company value. The influence of intellectual capital on financial performance reached 69.6%, which means that most of the variability of financial performance can be explained by changes in intellectual capital. In addition, the combination of intellectual capital and financial performance contributed 88.5% to the company's value.

Conclusion

From the results of this study, it can be concluded that intellectual capital has a significant positive influence on company value through financial performance as an intervening variable. This underlines the importance of investment in the development of intellectual assets for banking companies. By utilizing the power of intellectual capital, banks can improve their financial performance, which in turn will have a positive impact on the company's overall value. Through a deep understanding of these factors, companies can develop more effective strategies to face challenges in the banking industry that continues to develop.

The findings of this study have several implications for banking companies. Firstly, it highlights the importance of investing in intellectual capital, including human capital, structural capital, and relational capital. Secondly, it emphasizes the need for companies to optimize their financial performance by improving their profitability, liquidity, and operational efficiency. This study has several limitations. Firstly, the sample size was relatively small, which may limit the generalizability of the findings. Secondly, the study only focused on banking companies listed on the IDX, which may not be representative of all banking companies. Finally, the study only examined the effect of intellectual capital on company value using financial performance as an intervening variable, which may not capture other factors that influence company value.
