Introduction

Translation is a complex process, especially when dealing with literary works such as novels. One interesting example is the novel "The Scorch Trials", which is part of a trilogy written by James Dashner. This study aims to explore the translation techniques used in translating transitive verbs contained in this novel into Indonesian. In this descriptive qualitative research, the author analyzes sentences that contain transitive verbs both in the original language and their translation.

Background

Translation is a crucial aspect of language learning and communication. It involves the process of conveying the meaning of a text from one language to another. In the context of literary translation, the translator's goal is to preserve the original meaning, tone, and style of the text while adapting it to the target language and culture. The Scorch Trials novel, written by James Dashner, is a popular young adult dystopian novel that has been translated into many languages, including Indonesian. This study focuses on the translation techniques used in translating transitive verbs in the Indonesian version of the novel.

Methodology

In data collection, researchers read the entire text of the novel, noting every word included in the category of transitive verbs, as well as clarifying the techniques used to translate it. From the results of research conducted, 114 relevant data were found. This study not only provides a general picture of the type of verb found, but also provides insight into the translation techniques applied.

Translation Techniques

The seven translation techniques found in the translation of transitive verbs in this novel show the diversity and complexity of the approach used by the translator. The literal technique is the most widely used technique, reaching 71.7% of total data. This technique emphasizes the translation of word for word, which often maintains the original sentence structure. However, the use of this technique is not always successful in maintaining the true feel and meaning.

In addition, other techniques such as borrowing (2.6%) and modulation (3.5%) also appear in translation. Borrowing refers to the use of words or phrases from the source language in the target language, while modulation involves changes in viewing points of view that can provide different emphasis in the context of translation.

Transposition, which is used in 2.6% of cases, involves changes in grammatical structure, while discursive creations (6.1%) and amplification (12.2%) show how translator adds additional elements or clarifying information to increase the reader's understanding. The reduction technique that includes 1.8% shows that in some cases, translators feel the need to eliminate certain information that is considered unimportant.

Transitive Verb Classification

In the transitive verb classification found, the analysis shows that ekatransitive verbs dominate with a percentage of 41.4%, followed by dwitransitive (32.4%) and semitransitive (26.1%). This discovery shows that translators often face challenges in maintaining the accuracy of meaning when the words are translated into the target language. There are also three data in which transitive verbs are translated into intransitive verbs, which indicates a shift in meaning that needs to be examined further.

Conclusion

Overall, this research provides valuable insights on translation techniques in the literary context, as well as challenges faced by translators. The results of this study can be an important reference for academics, students, and translators who want to understand more about the translation process, especially related to transitive verbs in literary works. Thus, this research not only highlights translation techniques, but also opens a way for further research on how linguistic and cultural context can affect the results of translation.
