Introduction

Transparency in government financial information is a crucial aspect of good governance, as it enables citizens to hold their leaders accountable for their actions. In Indonesia, the local government plays a significant role in providing essential public services, and their financial management is a critical aspect of their operations. However, the level of transparency in local government financial information varies significantly across different regions and types of local governments. This study aims to analyze the influence of local government types, regional government size, and population on financial information transparency at the district and city level in Indonesia during the 2014-2016 period.

Methodology

This study employed a quantitative approach, using multiple linear regression analysis to examine the relationship between local government types, regional government size, and population on financial information transparency. The population studied consisted of all local governments in Indonesia, comprising 98 city governments and 416 district governments. A total of 93 samples were taken for three observation periods, with data collected through documentation studies and purposive sampling methods.

Results

The results of this study showed that the type of local government had a negative influence on the transparency of financial information, while the size of the local government and the population did not show a significant effect partially. However, when tested simultaneously, the type of local government, the size of the local government, and the population were proven to have a positive and significant influence on the transparency of financial information in the local government.

Discussion

The type of local government in Indonesia is often divided into two major categories: the Regional Government led by the elected regional head and led by the apparatus. This study found that a more bureaucratic type of government tends to result in low transparency in financial information. This may be caused by a slower decision-making process and the inability to adapt to the higher public information needs. On the other hand, more participatory and open local governments tend to produce more transparent information, thereby increasing public confidence.

Regarding the size of the local government, a larger size is not always directly proportional to financial transparency. Larger local governments may face a higher complexity in financial management and reporting, which in turn can hamper transparency. Conversely, smaller local governments may be better able to manage and convey financial information effectively to the public, even though their financial capacity may be limited.

The population also apparently did not show a significant effect on the transparency of financial information. This may be caused by variations in the level of education and community participation, which can affect their needs and demands for information transparency. Local governments that have a population with a higher level of education are likely to be more depressed to provide transparent financial information.

Conclusion

Overall, the results of this study underline the importance of local government types in determining the level of transparency of financial information. In this context, improvements to a more open and responsive government system of public information needs can help increase transparency and accountability at the local level. Steps such as training for government officials and improving information technology infrastructure can also contribute to increased transparency in the future.

Recommendations

By understanding the influence of these various factors, it is hoped that public policy can be designed better to facilitate greater financial transparency, which in turn will increase public confidence in local governments. Limitations

This study has some limitations that should be noted. Firstly, the study only examined the influence of local government types, regional government size, and population on financial information transparency, and did not consider other factors that may also influence transparency. Secondly, the study only examined the situation in Indonesia and may not be generalizable to other countries. Finally, the study only examined the situation during the 2014-2016 period and may not reflect the current situation.
