Bacterial samples were obtained from pure culture that was grown on the Mueller Hinton agar (MHA) media and incubated in anaerobic conditions. Measurement of inhibition strength was done using a caliper to determine the diameter of the inhibition zone.

Research Result

SEM analysis in 1000x enlargement shows that tetracycline can be seen on the surface of chitosan. The results of FTIR analysis showed a compatibility between chitosan and tetracycline, which showed that the two components interact well. Through anova testing, significant differences were found in the average diameter of the inhibition zone between the groups being tested. The average diameter of the zone inhibiting chip chitosan tetracycline 0.7% against p. gingivalist was 14.75 ± 0.75 mm (strong category), against a. Actinomycetemcomitans was 25.67 ± 2,082 mm (very strong category), and against f. Nucleatum was 35.33 ± 0.764 mm (very strong category).

Chip chitosan containing 0.7% tetracycline proved effective in inhibiting the growth of periodontal pathogenic bacteria, such as a. actinomycetemcomitans, p. Gingivalist, and f. Nucleatum. Thus, this chip offers potential as a promising local therapy for the treatment of periodontal disease. Innovation in the development of this chip can be a step forward in presenting a safer and more effective solution to overcome periodontal infections, as well as reducing dependence on systemic therapy that can cause adverse side effects.

Future Directions

Further studies are needed to investigate the long-term efficacy and safety of chip chitosan tetracycline 0.7% in inhibiting periodontal pathogenic bacteria. Additionally, the development of a more controlled release system for tetracycline from the chip could improve its effectiveness. The use of other natural biopolymers, such as alginate or gelatin, as drug carriers could also be explored.
