Introduction

Rice: A Staple Food in Indonesia Rice is one of the most widely consumed staples in Indonesia, providing significant health benefits for the community. Rich in carbohydrates and sources of vitamins and minerals, it is a vital component of the Indonesian diet. However, behind these benefits, there are adverse practices, where irresponsible individuals add chlorine bleach to rice with the aim of attracting the attention of the buyer. This practice not only threatens consumer health but also damages the reputation of local rice products.

The Problem of Chlorine in Rice The addition of chlorine clearly violates the Minister of Agriculture Regulation No. 32 of 2007, which prohibits the use of 13 chemicals in the process of grinding, stripping, and polishing rice. This regulation is in place to ensure the safety and quality of rice for consumption. However, the practice of adding chlorine to rice continues to be a problem in the Gambir Market, Percut Sei Tuan District.

Methodology

Research Design

This study aims to analyze the content of chlorine in white rice sold in the Gambir Market and assess the level of traders' knowledge regarding the content of chlorine in rice. The type of research conducted is a descriptive survey with a quantitative approach. The research subject sample consists of 10 traders, while the object sample is 5 rice brands that will be tested using the argentometric titration method in the Analytical Chemistry Laboratory of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of North Sumatra.

Data Collection Methods

Data collection methods are carried out through questionnaires and observation sheets. The questionnaires are designed to gather information about the traders' knowledge regarding the content of chlorine in rice, while the observation sheets are used to record the traders' practices and behaviors related to the sale of rice.

Results

Chlorine Content in Rice Samples

The results showed that all rice samples tested were detected containing chlorine. The highest level of chlorine content is found in a sample with a concentration of 134.71 mg/l, while the lowest is 88.62 mg/l. These results indicate that the practice of adding chlorine to rice is widespread in the Gambir Market.

Traders' Knowledge

In terms of traders' knowledge, the majority are in the medium category, where 8 traders (80%) are included in that category. Only 2 traders (20%) are in the bad category, and there are no traders who have a good category of knowledge about the dangers of chlorine in rice.

Implications of the Results

From this result, it can be concluded that chlorine is found in all rice samples, and most traders have a level of knowledge that is still in the medium category. Therefore, it is recommended to the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) and the Health Office to be more active in overseeing rice circulating from producers and imposing strict sanctions to those who are proven to add chlorine to food, especially rice.

Recommendations

In addition, traders need to increase their understanding of the characteristics of chlorine contaminated rice, in order to guarantee that the rice they sell is free from this dangerous material. The practice of adding chlorine not only threatens consumer health, but also damages the reputation of local rice products. Therefore, collaboration between government agencies, traders, and the community is very important to educate and increase awareness about the dangers of chlorine and the importance of food safety.

With better knowledge, it is hoped that traders can play an active role in maintaining the quality of rice sold and ensuring public health is maintained. The results of this study highlight the need for increased awareness and education about the dangers of chlorine in rice and the importance of food safety. By working together, we can ensure that the rice sold in the Gambir Market is safe for consumption and that the reputation of local rice products is protected.

Limitations of the Study

This study has several limitations. Firstly, the sample size is relatively small, consisting of only 10 traders and 5 rice brands.
