One of the main sources of textile industry liquid waste is the coloring process, which involves the use of synthetic dyes such as Azo textile dyes. Azo textile dyes are a special concern because of their resistance to degradation in the environment, and some of their degradation products are even carcinogenic. This encourages research to find environmentally friendly solutions in overcoming Azo textile coloring waste.

The Problem of Azo Textile Dyes

Azo textile dyes are widely used in the textile industry due to their bright colors and durability. However, their use has several negative consequences. Firstly, Azo textile dyes are resistant to degradation in the environment, which means that they can persist in water and soil for a long time. The results showed that all fungal isolates were able to grow well at the concentration of 100 ppm dyes, with NA8 isolates showing maximum growth on the 6th day in the incubator.

Quantitative Decoloration Test

To evaluate the decoloration ability of the mushroom isolates, we carried out a quantitative decoloration test on liquid MSM media with the addition of 0.2% glucose. Five mushroom isolates, namely Na2, Na3, Na1, Na4, and Na9, were tested, and the results showed that they were able to decolorize dyes with a percentage ranging from 61.5% to 73.3%. This indicates that the mushroom isolates were able to break down the Azo textile dyes into simpler compounds, which were then removed from the environment.

Immobilization of Mushrooms in Polyurethane Foam

To improve the efficiency of the decoloration process, we immobilized the mushroom isolates in polyurethane foam (PUF). The results showed that Na9, NA3, and NA4 isolates showed an increase in the percentage of decoloration compared to the mycelium of the fungus in a free condition. This indicates that the immobilization of mushrooms in PUF was able to increase the efficiency of the decoloration process.

The use of immobilized mushrooms in PUF has several advantages. Firstly, mushrooms immobilized can be used repeatedly, which makes them more economical. Secondly, the decoloration process can be done in a shorter time because mushrooms are immobilized have a broader contact surface with dyes. Thirdly, mushrooms immobilized are easily separated from the waste solution after the decoloration process, which facilitates waste management.

The use of immobilized mushrooms in PUF to decolorize Azo textile dyes has a great potential to reduce the negative impact of textile industry waste on the environment. This technology is expected to be an effective and environmentally friendly alternative solution for managing textile dyes in Indonesia. The advantages of immobilized mushrooms, including their ability to be used repeatedly, to increase the efficiency of the decoloration process, and to facilitate waste management, make them a promising approach for managing textile dyes.
