Contact dermatitis is a common skin condition that occurs due to direct contact with certain substances attached to the skin. This condition can have a serious negative impact on individuals, including psychosocial problems. In the laundry industry, detergent is one of the main causes of contact dermatitis among workers. Symptoms such as itching and burning can interfere with daily activities for sufferers. Therefore, it is essential to understand the level of knowledge and attitudes of laundry workers towards contact dermatitis.

Contact dermatitis is a type of skin inflammation that occurs when the skin comes into contact with an allergen or irritant. The symptoms of contact dermatitis can range from mild to severe and can include redness, itching, burning, and blistering. In the laundry industry, detergent is a common cause of contact dermatitis among workers. The use of harsh chemicals and detergents can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions.

This study aims to measure the level of knowledge and attitudes of laundry workers regarding contact dermatitis in Padang Bulan Village in 2017. A descriptive design with a cross-sectional method was used in this study. The sample studied was taken in total sampling, covering all laundry workers in the region. A questionnaire was used to collect data from respondents, which were then processed using computer software.

The results of this study show that the level of knowledge of laundry workers regarding contact dermatitis is mostly in the sufficient category. The data obtained from the questionnaire show that:

63.6% of laundry workers had sufficient knowledge about the causes of contact dermatitis
27.3% had good knowledge about the causes of contact dermatitis
6.1% had less knowledge about the causes of contact dermatitis
39.4% showed good knowledge about the symptoms of contact dermatitis
36.4% showed less knowledge about the symptoms of contact dermatitis
24.3% showed sufficient knowledge about the symptoms of contact dermatitis
66.7% had sufficient knowledge about countermeasures for contact dermatitis
30.3% had good knowledge about countermeasures for contact dermatitis
3% had less knowledge about countermeasures for contact dermatitis

The attitude analysis of laundry workers shows that:

45.5% had a good attitude towards the causes of contact dermatitis
33.3% had a sufficient attitude towards the causes of contact dermatitis
21.2% had a less attitude towards the causes of contact dermatitis
42.4% had enough attitude towards the symptoms of contact dermatitis
33.3% had a good attitude towards the symptoms of contact dermatitis
24.2% had a less attitude towards the symptoms of contact dermatitis
39.4% had a less attitude towards preventing contact dermatitis
36.4% had a sufficient attitude towards preventing contact dermatitis
24.2% had a good attitude towards preventing contact dermatitis

From this study, it can be concluded that the level of knowledge and attitudes of laundry workers in Padang Bulan Village regarding contact dermatitis is mostly in the sufficient category. Although there are a number of workers who show good knowledge and attitudes, there are still some who have less knowledge and attitudes. This shows the need for further education and training programs regarding the dangers of contact dermatitis and its prevention to increase understanding and awareness among laundry workers. Thus, it is expected that the quality of health and work safety of workers can be improved.

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Further education and training programs should be conducted to increase understanding and awareness among laundry workers regarding the dangers of contact dermatitis and its prevention.
The use of personal protective equipment (PPE) should be encouraged among laundry workers to prevent skin irritation and allergic reactions.
The laundry industry should provide a safe and healthy working environment for workers, including the use of safe and gentle detergents.
Workers should be encouraged to report any skin irritation or allergic reactions to their supervisors or management.

This study has several limitations, including:

The sample size was relatively small, which may not be representative of the entire laundry industry.
The study was conducted in a specific region, which may not be generalizable to other regions.
The study only measured the level of knowledge and attitudes of laundry workers regarding contact dermatitis and did not explore other factors that may contribute to the development of contact dermatitis.
