The Influence of Social Support of Peers who are Mediated by Emotional Regulations on Adolescent Adjustments in the Pesantren

Abstract

This study aims to explore the effect of social support from peers on adolescent adjustments in pesantren. The main focus of this study includes: (1) the influence of peer social support on adolescent adjustments; (2) the influence of social support on teen emotional regulations; (3) the effect of emotional regulation on adolescent adjustment; and (4) the influence of peer social support mediated by emotional regulations on adolescent adjustments. The results showed a positive influence between the social support of peers on adolescent adjustments in pesantren, but the social support of peers did not have a significant influence on teen emotional regulations. Furthermore, there is a clear influence between emotional regulation and adolescent adjustment, and the influence of peer social support on adolescent adjustments in pesantren was not mediated by emotional regulations.

Introduction

The pesantren is a unique educational institution in Indonesia that combines Islamic education with traditional boarding school settings. The pesantren provides a unique environment for adolescents to learn and develop, but it can also be challenging for them to adjust to the new environment. Social support from peers is one of the important factors that can contribute to adolescent adjustments in the pesantren. However, the role of social support in emotional regulations and adolescent adjustments is not well understood. This study aims to explore the effect of social support from peers on adolescent adjustments in pesantren, with a focus on the influence of peer social support on adolescent adjustments, the influence of social support on teen emotional regulations, the effect of emotional regulation on adolescent adjustment, and the influence of peer social support mediated by emotional regulations on adolescent adjustments.

Methodology

This study used a quantitative approach with a sample of 278 teenagers who attended class VIII and IX at the Islamic Boarding School Darululrafah. The method used for sampling is probability sampling with cluster sampling techniques. The data obtained were analyzed using the path analysis method.

Results

The results of this study showed some interesting findings. First, there is a positive influence between the social support of peers on adolescent adjustments in pesantren. This indicates that when teenagers get support from their friends, they tend to be more able to adapt and adjust to the pesantren environment that might have its own challenges.

However, this study also found that the social support of peers did not have a significant influence on teen emotional regulations. This is an interesting question, given social support is often considered an important factor in managing emotions. There may be other variables that are more influential in this context, such as the family environment or pesantren culture itself.

Furthermore, there is a clear influence between emotional regulation and adolescent adjustment. This shows that the ability of adolescents to manage their emotions has a direct impact on how they adjust to the situation in the pesantren. Teenagers who are able to regulate emotions well tend to be more successful in adjusting to this new environment.

Interestingly, this study also found that the influence of peer social support on adolescent adjustments in pesantren was not mediated by emotional regulations. This shows that although social support is important, the impact may not be through emotional regulations. That is, social support can directly strengthen adjustment without having to go through the emotional management process first.

Discussion

The results of this study provide an important insight into social dynamics in pesantren and how the support of peers can contribute to adolescent adjustments. The positive influence of social support on adolescent adjustments in pesantren suggests that educators and parents should pay attention to the social relations of adolescents in the pesantren environment. Creating a positive support network between adolescents can help them to more easily adapt and develop in a unique pesantren environment.

However, the lack of significant influence of social support on teen emotional regulations suggests that there may be other variables that are more influential in this context. The family environment and pesantren culture may play a more significant role in managing emotions in adolescents. Further research is needed to explore these variables and their impact on emotional regulations and adolescent adjustments.

Conclusion

This study provides an important contribution to the understanding of social dynamics in pesantren and how the support of peers can contribute to adolescent adjustments. The results suggest that social support can directly strengthen adjustment without having to go through the emotional management process first. However, further research is needed to explore the role of other variables in managing emotions in adolescents. By understanding the complex relationships between social support, emotional regulations, and adolescent adjustments, educators and parents can develop more effective strategies to support adolescents in the pesantren environment.

This study has several limitations. First, the sample size was relatively small, and the study was conducted in a single pesantren. Further research is needed to replicate the study in other pesantren and with a larger sample size.
