Introduction

Critical illness in children is a life-threatening condition that requires immediate attention and proper management. However, the relationship between bacterial infection markers and Pelod-2 scores in critical illness children is not well understood.

Children who are treated in critical conditions often experience body homeostasis disorders, which can result in organ dysfunction and increase the risk of death. Therefore, appropriate monitoring and assessment are very important in handling this patient. The Pelod-2 Score is a valuable tool for medical personnel in determining the severity of the child's condition and planning the necessary medical measures. By analyzing the relationship between bacterial infection markers and Pelod-2 scores, we can get a better understanding of the clinical conditions of a critical illness patient.

Research Purposes

This study aims to determine the relationship between neutrophil, lymphocyte, neutrophil/lymphocyte, platelet, RDW, PCT, and CRP dysfunction ratios with measured organ dysfunction through Pelod-2 scores in pediatric patients who are in critical condition. The study will provide valuable insights into the clinical conditions of critical illness children and help medical professionals in making informed decisions.

Research Methods

In this study, the analytic method with a cross-sectional approach was applied to pediatric patients in critical illness aged over 1 month to 18 years. The research subjects were taken from the High Care Unit (HCU) and the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Adam Malik Hospital, Medan, in the November 2020 period to February 2021. Assessment of Pelod-2 Scores and Laboratory Examination which included neutrophils, lymphocytes, neutrophils ratios /lymphocytes, platelets, RDW, PCT, and CRP are carried out within 24 hours after the patient is treated.

Research Result

Of the 52 subjects analyzed, the results show that the neutrophils, lymphocyte, neutrophil/lymphocyte, platelet, and RDW ratios which are measured in the first 24 hours have no correlation with Pelod-2 scores in critical illness children. Conversely, the value of PCT and CRP measured at the same time indicates a positive correlation with Pelod-2-2 scores. For PCT, the value of R = 0.463 (p = 0.001) is obtained, while for CRP, the value of R = 0.320 (p = 0.021) against the Pelod-2 score.

Conclusion

The results showed that PCT and CRP had a significant positive correlation with Pelod-2 scores in critical illness children. Increasing the value of PCT and CRP is in line with an increase in Pelod-2 scores, which shows that these two markers can be used as an initial indicator in assessing the severity of organ dysfunction due to bacterial infections in children in critical conditions. This knowledge is not only valuable to medical professionals in clinical decision making, but also provides important insights for further research in the field of pediatrics.
