Abstract

The Simalungun ethnicity, as an original ethnic group in Sei Mangkei, Simalungun Regency, has been facing marginalization due to the arrival of migrants from various regions. This study aims to explore the phenomenon of Simalungun ethnic marginalization and its driving factors. Through direct observations and interviews with the Simalungun ethnic community and migrants, this study found that Javanese ethnic migration, as well as the presence of ethnic Toba, Tapanuli, and Karo, contributed to the complexity of social interaction in the region. The marginalization experienced by the Simalungun ethnicity not only occurs physically but also in cultural aspects, with many Simalungun people forgetting their language and cultural knowledge. This study concludes that the Simalungun ethnicity has not been able to maintain its status as an original ethnic group in Sei Mangkei, Simalungun Regency, due to the fast migration process and dominance of migrants.
