The process of making recycled paper can be done by mixing cellulose and hemicellulose derived from plants. This study aims to evaluate the most effective composition ratio between used paper and several types of agricultural waste fibers, such as rice straw, banana fronds, and palm oil leaves in recycled paper making.

Methodology and Materials

This study was conducted at the agricultural engineering biosystem laboratory, the Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra, from August to November 2017. The recycled paper quality test was carried out at the Laboratory of the Center for Pulp and Paper in Bandung. The methodology used in this study is a complete non-factorial random design, with a varied composition ratio of 0% used paper: 100% agricultural waste; 25%: 75%; 50%: 50%; 75%: 25%; and 100%: 0%. Observed parameters include tear resistance, tensile resistance, stiffness, roughness, and water absorption from paper.

Results and Discussion

The results showed that the composition of the mixture used in recycling paper making had a significant effect on the quality of the paper produced. The best paper is produced in a composition of 50% used paper and 50% of agricultural waste fibers. This paper quality is marked by a tear resistance value of 0.72 nm²/kg, tensile resistance of 2.28 kN/m, stiffness 663.00 gf.cm, roughness 2,400 ml/minute, and water absorption 608.0 g/m².
