Analysis of Changes in Rice Fields in the Catchment Area of Lake Toba with Long-Distance Sensing Using the Supervised Method

Introduction

The catchment area of Lake Toba, located in North Sumatra, Indonesia, is a significant agricultural region, with rice being one of the primary crops grown in the area. The expansion of rice fields in this region has been a topic of interest for researchers and policymakers, as it can have both positive and negative impacts on the environment and the local community. This study aims to analyze the changes in rice fields in the catchment area of Lake Toba between 2013 and 2016 using long-distance sensing with the supervised method.

Methodology

The method used in this study is supervised classification, which involves utilizing Landsat satellite imagery 8. The research was conducted in the Computerized Laboratory and Geographic Information System of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Sumatra North, from September 2017 to January 2018. The data used included Landsat 8 imagery on Path 128 ROW 58 and Path 129 ROW 58 for 2013 to 2016. Data processing was carried out using Quantum GIS (QGIS) software with image interpretation techniques using the maximum likelihood method.

Results

The results of this study showed a significant change in the area of rice fields in the catchment area of Lake Toba. In 2013, the total rice fields were recorded at 18,179.11 hectares, which increased to 19,637.8 hectares in 2016. This increase shows the addition of paddy fields in that period. In addition, total rice production in this area also increased, from 333,634.56 tons in 2013 to 337,546.43 tons in 2016.

Seeing the data obtained, there is an indication that an increase in rice fields around Lake Toba can be influenced by various factors. First, government programs and agricultural policies that support the expansion of agricultural areas can be one of the main causes.
