Introduction

Posterior dental restoration, especially in class II, often fails due to fractures. This happens because restoration is unable to withstand high occlusal pressure. To overcome this problem, recent research has shown that the addition of short fiber in composite resin can be one solution to improve the mechanical properties of restorative materials. The use of short fiber reinforced composite resin as an intermediate layer has been shown to increase the strength and resistance to fractures of composite resin restorations.

Background

Class II restorations are a common type of dental restoration that involves the restoration of teeth that have been damaged by decay or trauma. However, these restorations often fail due to fractures, which can be caused by a variety of factors, including high occlusal pressure and the inability of the restoration material to withstand this pressure. Methodology

In this study, 30 maxillary premolar teeth that had been extracted were divided into three groups. The first group gets short fiber reinforced composite with a thickness of 2 mm, the second group uses a 4 mm short fiber reinforced composite, and the third group uses nanohybrid composite resins.

After the restoration is carried out, all samples are immersed in artificial saliva for 24 hours and then through the thermocycling process to simulate the condition of the mouth. The fracture resistance test is carried out using the Universal Testing Machine with a maximum load until the fracture occurs. Statistical analysis was carried out using one way anova and post hoc test LSD (Least Significant Difference) with a degree of significantness α = 0.05.

Results

The results of the statistical analysis showed the value of P = 0.03 (p <0.05), which shows a significant difference between the entire treatment group. The Post Hoc Test LSD test also shows a significant difference between groups 1 and group 2, as well as between group 2 and group 3. However, there is no significant difference between group 1 and group 3. Descriptively, group 2 shows the highest average fracture resistance (535.71 N), followed by group 1 (444.21 N), while group 3 has the lowest fracture resistance (438.65 N).

Discussion

The results of this study show that the addition of short fiber reinforced composite as an intermediate layer significantly increases the resistance of composite resin restoration fractures in class II. This shows the potential use of short fiber reinforced composite to strengthen posterior dental restoration, which in turn can increase the long-term success of this restoration procedure.
