Comparative Analysis of Socio-Economic Levels Assured Bitra Farmers and Anorgani Farmers (Case Study of Lubuk Bayas Village, Perbaungan District, Serdang Bedagai Regency)

Introduction

The agricultural sector plays a vital role in the economy of many countries, including Indonesia. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in organic farming as a more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional farming methods. However, the adoption of organic farming practices has been hindered by various factors, including limited market access, lack of knowledge and skills, and dependence on chemical fertilizers and pesticides. This study aims to conduct a comparative analysis of the socio-economic levels of organic and inorganic farmers in Lubuk Bayas Village, Perbaungan District, Serdang Bedagai Regency, to identify the differences and similarities between the two groups.

Methodology

This study used a comparative descriptive method with purposive sampling. The sample used was 20 households, consisting of 10 Organic Farmer Households assisted by Bitra and 10 Inorganic Farmers' Households. Data was collected through questionnaires, interviews, observations, and literature studies. The data analysis was conducted using the U Mann Whitney test at a significance level of 0.05 with a two-tail test.

Results

The results of the analysis show that there is no significant difference in the socio-economic level between organic and inorganic farmers. However, the data shows that the socio-economic level of organic farmers respondents is slightly higher than inorganic farmers. This difference is caused by a side job carried out by some organic farmers, such as becoming a Civil Servant (PNS).

Discussion

The results of this study indicate that the Bitra assisted program for organic agriculture in Lubuk Bayas Village has not shown a significant impact on the socio-economic improvement of farmers. Some of the factors that might be the cause are:

The duration of the assisted program: The Bitra assisted program may not run long enough to have a significant impact on the socio-economic improvement of farmers.
Limited market access: Organic farmers may have difficulty in accessing markets that promise higher prices for their products.
Lack of knowledge and skills: Organic farmers may still need further training and guidance to increase knowledge and skills in the management of organic farming.
Dependence on chemical fertilizers and pesticides: Although some organic farmers use organic fertilizers and pesticides, they may still depend on synthetic chemicals to increase yields. This can reduce the economic benefits of organic agriculture.

Recommendation

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Increasing the duration and intensity of the assisted program: The assisted program needs to be extended and strengthened to provide more sustainable support to organic farmers.
Development of market access: It takes efforts to expand market access for organic agricultural products, both through cooperation with marketing institutions and by building its own marketing network.
Comprehensive training and guidance: Organic farmers need to be given comprehensive training and guidance regarding the technical aspects of organic cultivation, financial management, and product marketing.
Increasing awareness of the importance of organic agriculture: It is necessary to make efforts to increase public awareness about the importance of organic agriculture for health and the environment, so that demand for organic products increases.

Conclusion

This study shows that the Bitra assisted program for organic agriculture in Lubuk Bayas Village has not shown a significant impact on the socio-economic improvement of farmers. Further efforts are needed to overcome the factors that hinder the progress of the assisted program and to ensure that this program can provide concrete benefits for organic farmers.

Limitations of the Study

This study has several limitations, including:
