This study was conducted from February 2013 to March 2015 in five different palm plantation locations in North Sumatra, namely Bukit Sentang Garden, Padang Mandarsah Garden, Ajamu Garden, Sijambu-Jambu Garden, and Pancur Aek Kebun. Each location has an area of 50 hectares and is divided into three age groups of oil palm plants: 1-5 years, 6-15 years, and over 15 years.

Experimental Design

To determine the contribution of epiphytes to the diversity of canopy insects, the study was conducted with three treatments: epiphytes were not trimmed (100%), epiphytes were cut in part (50%), and the epiphytic was cleaned (0%).

Results and Findings

Epiphyte Diversity and Abundance

The results showed that there were 87 vascular epiphytic species with a total of 65,751 individuals, who were incorporated in 37 tribes. The two most dominant epiphytic species are nephrolepis biserrata and goniophlebium verrucosum. In addition, as many as 13,433 individual insects were captured both during the day and night. These insects consist of seven classes, namely insecta, arachnid, crustacea, chilopoda, collembola, and isoptera.

From the observations, insects from the Formicidae family are the most, followed by curculionidae. It was found that gardens with epiphytes that are not trimmed have a number of individuals and more variations in insect families compared to gardens whose epiphytes are cleaned. Insects found in the field are mostly useful roles in ecosystems, such as Oecophyla smaragdina, Camponotus sp., and various genus from the Syrphidae and Blatellidae families, while some others, such as the Anthribidae and Chrysomelidae families, are included in the category of insects potentially detrimental.
