Revealing the Secret Behind Nias Fisheries Production: Panel Data Analysis 2008-2012

The Nias region, located in the province of North Sumatra, Indonesia, is known for its rich marine resources and significant fisheries production. However, the sector has been facing various challenges, including overfishing, habitat destruction, and lack of investment. This study aims to analyze the effect of the number of fleets, the number of fishermen, gross regional domestic product (GRDP), and investment on fisheries production in the Nias region using panel data analysis.

Methodology

This study used secondary data collected from the Central Statistics Agency and the Fisheries Service. The data used in this study is panel data, which is a type of data that contains multiple observations of the same variables over time. The data used in this study covers five regencies/cities in the Nias region, namely Nias Regency, South Nias Regency, North Nias Regency, West Nias Regency, and Gunungsitoli City. The observation period is from 2008 to 2012, which is a total of five years.

Results

The results of the panel data analysis show that the number of fleets and the number of fishermen have a positive and significant influence on fisheries production in the Nias region. This means that the more fleets and fishermen, the higher the production of fisheries. However, the results also show that GRDP has a negative and significant influence on fisheries production in the Nias region. This may be caused by several factors, such as land conversion, water pollution, and lack of investment in the fisheries sector. Meanwhile, investment has an insignificant negative influence on fisheries production in the Nias region.

Testing and Model Selection

The results of the Chow and Hausman testing show that the best method used in this study is the Fixed Effect Model (FEM). This model is used to analyze the data because it takes into account the individual effects of each observation, which is important in panel data analysis. The testing also shows that there are differences in fisheries production between districts/cities in the Nias region.

The findings of this study have important implications for the development of the fisheries sector in the Nias region. Increasing the number of fleets and fishermen needs to be balanced with sustainable fisheries management strategies, such as the application of zoning systems, catch restrictions, and training for fishermen.
