Introduction

The world is facing a significant challenge in meeting the increasing demand for food, particularly carbohydrates, due to the growing population. In Indonesia, the availability of alternative carbohydrate sources is crucial to ensure regional food security and provide variations in food consumption. One of the potential sources of carbohydrates is tubers, which include various types such as cassava, sweet potatoes, potatoes, and taro. These tubers are not only a vital component of the Indonesian diet but also have the potential to contribute significantly to the income of local farmers.

Background

Serdang Bedagai Regency is one of the regions in Indonesia that has the potential to develop tuber cultivation as an alternative carbohydrate source. The regency has a diverse geography, with varying altitudes and climates, making it suitable for cultivating different types of tubers. However, the development of tuber cultivation in this region is still in its infancy, and there is a need to identify and inventory the types of tubers that have the potential to be cultivated in Serdang Bedagai Regency.

Methodology

This study aims to provide an overview of the types of tubers that have the potential to be cultivated in Serdang Bedagai Regency. The study was conducted from July to August 2013 and involved several different locations. Three sub-districts were selected with varying altitudes, and from each sub-district, three villages were determined to take samples. In each village, three farmers were chosen as respondents. A survey was conducted in the Serdang Bedagai Regency using a sampling technique with judgmental sampling, as well as nonprobability techniques with an accidental sampling approach to selecting farmers involved. Primary data were obtained through direct interviews with farmers at the study site, while secondary data were collected from various other sources to support primary data findings.

Results

The results of the study showed that the various types of tubers cultivated in Serdang Bedagai Regency include cassava, sweet potatoes, potatoes, and taro. The method of planting applied by farmers varies greatly, ranging from traditional methods to more efficient modern techniques. The level of maintenance and utilization of the results of each study site also varies greatly.

Discussion

The tubers are a very important source of carbohydrates in the diet of Indonesian society. The availability of alternative carbohydrate sources not only provides variations in food consumption but also supports regional food security. In the context of Serdang Bedagai Regency, the identification and inventory of the type of tuber-plantations provides valuable insights on the potential of cultivation of this plant.
