Supplementation of Hydrolyzate Chicken Feather Flour and Essential Minerals in Plantation Waste Based Rations on Total VFA Production and NH3 in Male Sheep
Introduction
The use of plantation waste as a feed source for livestock has gained significant attention in recent years due to its potential to reduce waste disposal costs and promote sustainability in animal husbandry. In this context, the research conducted by Taufan Alam Nasution in 2002 aimed to evaluate the effects of the addition of chicken feather flour hydrolysis and essential minerals in sheep feed based on plantation waste.
Background and Significance
The use of plantation waste as a feed source for livestock has several benefits, including reducing waste disposal costs, promoting sustainability, and improving animal health. However, the nutritional value of plantation waste can vary depending on the type of waste, the level of supplementation, and the nutritional requirements of the animals. In this study, the researchers aimed to evaluate the effects of the addition of chicken feather flour hydrolysis and essential minerals in sheep feed based on plantation waste.
Methodology
The study was conducted at the livestock biology laboratory majoring in Animal Husbandry, Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra, from December 2001 to April 2002. The design used in this study was a factorial random group (rack) consisting of eight treatments. The treatment included P1, P2, P3, to P4 which uses basal rations, as well as the addition of 3% hydrolyzate of chicken fur flour and essential minerals in concentration variations such as 0.12% CL, 0.17% S, 0.40 ppm I, 0, 15 ppm CO, and 0.15 ppm SE. This study involved two types of sheep, namely SEI Putih sheep and local Sumatran sheep, as a test group.
Results
The results of the study showed that the supplementation carried out had a positive impact on the production of total Volatile Fatty Acids (VFA) and Ammonia (NH3). The highest production of VFA and NH3 is recorded in White Sei Sheep which gets basal rations supplemented with hydrolysis of chicken feather flour and essential minerals, reaching 125.71 mmol/100 ml for VFA and 11.60 mg/100 ml for NH3.
Discussion
The results of this study indicate that the hydrolysis of chicken feather flour and essential minerals has a significant contribution in increasing the efficiency of sheep feed. VFA produced in high amounts can be an indicator that the feed given has been fermented well by rumen microbes. VFA is the main source of energy for sheep and other ruminant animals, thereby increasing its production can support animal growth and health.
The presence of essential minerals in the ration is also very important. These minerals function as cofactors in various biochemical reactions that support feed metabolism and improve the health of the digestive system. This research proves that plantation waste can not only be used as feed, but can also be increased through appropriate supplementation, making the concept of sustainability in the farm more relevant.
Conclusion
Overall, this research provides guidance for farmers to use plantation waste more effectively in sheep rations. With an understanding of the importance of appropriate supplementation, farmers can increase livestock productivity and have a positive impact on the economy of local animal husbandry. Through the use of existing resources, this research can be the first step in developing a more sustainable and environmentally friendly livestock system.
