Analysis of Nitrate Content (NO3-) in Conventional and Hydroponic Green Lettuce Marketed in the City of Medan by the UV-Visible Spectrophotometry Method

Introduction

The increasing demand for fresh and healthy vegetables has led to the growth of the hydroponic industry, which is a method of growing plants in a controlled environment without soil. However, the use of fertilizers in both conventional and hydroponic methods has raised concerns about the potential accumulation of nitrates in vegetables. Nitrate (NO3-) is a naturally occurring compound that can be found in soil, water, and air, but excessive consumption can be harmful to human health. In this study, we analyzed the nitrate content in conventional and hydroponic green lettuce marketed in the city of Medan using the UV-Visible spectrophotometry method.

Methodology

The study was conducted in the city of Medan, where conventional and hydroponic green lettuce samples were collected from several markets and vegetable sellers. The samples were prepared by extraction using nitrate-free distilled water and heating at temperatures below 80 ° C for 25 minutes. The nitrate content analysis was carried out at two wavelengths, namely λ = 220 nm and λ = 275 nm, with the addition of 1N HCl before testing.

Results

The results of the analysis showed that both conventional and hydroponic green lettuce had high nitrate content. The nitrate levels in conventional lettuce from three different markets in Medan were as follows:

Discussion

The results of the analysis show that both conventional and hydroponic green lettuce have high nitrate content. The nitrate content that exceeds the recommended limit can be a serious concern for consumer health. According to the ADI Guidelines (Average Daily Intake), safe nitrate consumption is 3.7 mg/kg of body weight every day. The high levels of nitrate in green vegetables such as lettuce can be caused by several factors, including the use of nitrate fertilizer in agricultural processes, both in conventional and hydroponic methods.

This high level of nitrate shows the importance of strict supervision and regulation on the use of fertilizers and vegetable cultivation techniques, especially for vegetables that are consumed as widely consumed.
