Revealing the search behavior of Fis Unimed Student Information in the digital age

The digital era has revolutionized the way we access and utilize information. The widespread availability of digital information sources, such as the internet, social media, and other digital platforms, has transformed the way we search for and utilize information. However, how do students use these digital information sources? This study aims to reveal the search behavior of information on the Faculty of Social Sciences Students (FIS) Medan State University (Unimed) in utilizing digital information sources.

Methodology

This study uses a quantitative descriptive method with proportionate stratified random sampling techniques. Data was collected through a questionnaire distributed to STRATA I FIS UNIMED students. The data analysis is carried out using an analytical framework that includes five components: identifying information needs, deciding to find information, implementing information discovery strategies, selecting information, and using information.

Identify information needs

The results showed that the majority of FIS Unimed students (38%) wrote important points regarding the information needed before starting the search. As many as 48% of students connect information or material to be sought, while 44% formulate the topic of the problem or write down relevant concepts to the topic you want to find. This shows that most students have understood the importance of identifying specific information needs before conducting a search.

Decided to find information

In deciding to find information, 60% of FIS Unimed students select the internet as the main source of information. This shows that the internet is the most easily accessible source of information and is considered up-to-date by students. In addition to the internet, 42% of students also ask experts in the scientific field related to their information needs.

Applying information discovery strategies

This study found that FIS Unimed students tend to use more efficient information search strategies. As many as 47% of students use the Boolean Logic (and, OR) operator in the search for information on the internet. Meanwhile, 37% of students limit file types (PDF, Word, HTML) in searching for information on the internet. In addition, 45% of students use the author's name as a keyword, 42% use the subject/theme, and 44% use the title as keywords in searching for information in search engines.

Selecting information

The information selection process is an important step to ensure that the information obtained is relevant and credible. As many as 46% of FIS Unimed students compared the source of information obtained to ensure the relevance of information. Then, 45% of students examine accountability and credibility of information sources, while 44% of students re-read the information chosen to ensure their compatibility.

Using information

The final step in the information search process is to use the information obtained. FIS UNIMED students (44%) process the information obtained in accordance with the purpose of the search. As many as 53% of students make information obtained as a reference material in the development of the treasury of science. As many as 48% of students said they often find information that suits their needs.

Conclusions and Recommendations

Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that FIS Unimed students are generally able to pass the stages of the information search process in utilizing digital information sources. However, there are still some weaknesses, such as lack of expertise in utilizing more effective information search strategies, especially the use of Boolean Logic operators.

The recommendation given is that FIS Unimed students can improve their ability to identify specific information needs, as well as implementing more efficient information search strategies. This increase can be done through training, seminars, and workshops on digital literacy and information search strategies.

Increasing the ability of students in utilizing digital information sources will have a positive impact on the teaching and learning process at FIS Unimed. This will help students in obtaining relevant, accurate, and credible information, so that they can support effective learning processes and improve the quality of learning in the future.

The findings of this study have significant implications for teaching and learning at FIS Unimed.
