Introduction

The growth and production of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) and corn (Zea mays (L.) are crucial for food security and sustainable agriculture. The use of cow manure as a fertilizer has been a common practice in agriculture, but its effectiveness and optimal dose are still debated. This study aimed to investigate the response of sorghum and corn to different doses of cow manure and to determine the optimal fertilizer dose for maximizing plant growth and production.

Methodology

This study was conducted on an experimental land located in the Caliph Bandar, with a height of about 21 meters above sea level (MDPL) from March 2022 to June 2022. The method used in this study was a random group design (rack) with two factors, namely type commodities with S1 (sorghum) and S2 (corn) treatment, as well as a dose of cow manure (K) consisting of K0 (without cow manure), K1 (25 tons of ha-1), K2 (30 tons of ha-1), and K3 (35 tons of HA-1). The parameters observed in this study include plant height, stem diameter, flowering age, panicle/colb weight per sample, the weight of the panicle/kolb per plot, the production of seeds, the production of seeds per plot, weight of 1000 seeds, wet straw weight per sample, and wet straw weight per plot.

Results

The results showed that the treatment of plant commodities had a significant effect on all observed parameters, except for plant height parameters at 5 MST. On the other hand, the treatment of cow manure dosage shows a significant effect on plant height parameters at the ages of 2, 3, and 4 MST, the age of flowering, and the weight of wet straw per plot. However, this treatment did not have a significant effect on the other parameters observed.

Discussion

The results of this study indicate that the type of commodity is very influential on the growth and production of sorghum and corn. This may be caused by differences in morphological and physiological characteristics between the two plants. Sorghum is known to have better resistance to unfavorable environmental conditions, such as drought, compared to corn. Therefore, sorghum can show better growth in less ideal conditions.
