The Effect of the Quality of Accounting, Accountability, Transparency, and Service Quality of Institutional Services on Zakat Reception in Amil Zakat Institutions in Medan City, 2015-2019 Period

Introduction

The acceptance of zakat in Amil Zakat Institutions (LAZ) is a crucial aspect of social welfare in Indonesia. Zakat, a form of charity, is one of the important sources of income for social institutions in the country. However, the acceptance of zakat in these institutions is influenced by various factors, including the quality of accounting information, accountability, transparency, and quality of institutional services. This study aims to reveal how these factors influence the acceptance of zakat in the Medan City Amil Zakat Institution (LAZ) during the 2015 to 2019 period.

Research Methodology

This study employed a causal associative research design, utilizing primary and secondary data from 30 LAZ samples in Medan. Various analytical methods were used, including data instrument tests, classical assumptions tests, and hypothesis tests. Further analysis was carried out with multiple linear regression to determine the effect of each variable on the acceptance of zakat.

Results

The results of the analysis show that:

Quality of Accounting Information has a negative effect on the acceptance of zakat. This can mean that inadequate or less transparent accounting information can reduce public trust to channel their zakat through these institutions.
Transparency and Institutional Service Quality have a positive and significant influence. When the Amil Zakat institution is able to provide clear information and good service, the community will be more likely to donate their zakat.
Accountability does not show a significant effect on zakat acceptance. This might indicate that although accountability is important, the impact is indirectly on the decision of the community in channeling zakat.

Simultaneously, the four variables - the quality of accounting information, accountability, transparency, and quality of institutional services - collectively have a positive and significant effect on zakat acceptance. This shows that the combination of all these factors is interrelated and important in increasing public confidence in the Amil Zakat institution.

Discussion

This research is important because it provides insight into the factors that can encourage increased acceptance of zakat. Considering zakat is one of the important sources of income for social institutions in Indonesia, understanding this dynamics is very crucial. The quality of poor accounting information can cause a lack of transparency which in turn will reduce public trust.

Meanwhile, transparency in the management of zakat and the quality of institutional services is the key to increasing the satisfaction and trust of the muzakki (zakat payers). Amil Zakat Institutions that apply high transparency practices, such as financial statements that can be accessed by the public and details about the use of zakat funds, tend to get greater support from the public.

In this context, the Amil Zakat institution needs to strengthen their management, both in the delivery of information and in managing services. Training for staff and application of information technology can be a solution to improve the quality of services and accountability.

Conclusion

The results of this study indicate that certain factors have a significant influence on the receipt of zakat in the Medan City Amil Zakat Institution. Therefore, it is important for these institutions to continue to improve the quality of information, accountability, transparency, and services in order to attract more people to participate in the management of zakat. This research opens opportunities for further research to explore other aspects that might affect the acceptance of zakat in the future.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Amil Zakat Institutions should prioritize the improvement of the quality of accounting information, transparency, and institutional services to increase public trust and confidence.
Training for staff and application of information technology can be a solution to improve the quality of services and accountability.
Amil Zakat Institutions should apply high transparency practices, such as financial statements that can be accessed by the public and details about the use of zakat funds.
Further research should be conducted to explore other aspects that might affect the acceptance of zakat in the future.

Limitations

This study has several limitations, including:

The study only focused on the Medan City Amil Zakat Institution, and the findings may not be generalizable to other LAZ in Indonesia.
The study only used primary and secondary data from 30 LAZ samples in Medan, and the sample size may not be representative of the entire population of LAZ in Indonesia.
The study only analyzed the effect of four variables on the acceptance of zakat, and other factors may also influence the acceptance of zakat.
