Introduction

[Intestinal parasitic infections] are a significant and common health problem in society, caused by intestinal and nematode protozoa. This disease can result in a decrease in individual health, nutritional status, intelligence, and productivity. The importance of the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and good personal hygiene practices is very instrumental in reducing parasitic transmission from soil to human, both through eggs, larvae, and adult parasites, especially for waste management officers who are directly related to the infected environment.

Background

The Final Disposal Site (TPA) in Medan is a location for garbage disposal from various areas in the city every day. The workers there face a high risk of being infected with intestinal parasites transmitted through the ground. Unfortunately, the lack of research data regarding intestinal parasitic infections among waste management officers, especially in the landfill, can result in the lack of education and understanding of how to protect themselves from intestinal parasitic diseases.

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study is to understand the relationship between the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and personal hygiene habits with the incidence of intestinal parasitic infections among garbage management officers in TPA plunge, Medan. This research was conducted by analytical survey method using latitude cutting research design, where independent and dependent variables were compared simultaneously to investigate the relationship between these variables.

Methodology

The number of samples in this study was 121 individuals. The most common age group was 20-44 years (46.3%), with female sex dominating (56.6%). Protective shoes are the most widely used PPE (95%), while the majority of respondents show good personal hygiene (69.4%). Most respondents (83.7%) were tested negatively for intestinal parasitic infections, and Egg A. Lumbricoides is the most commonly found in respondents with positive results (9.1%).

Results

The results of the study found that the use of PPE and personal hygiene did not show a significant relationship with the incidence of intestinal parasitic infections (P> 0.05). Although the use of PPE and personal hygiene habits is at a good level among garbage officers, this does not guarantee effective protection against intestinal parasitic infections.

Discussion

From these results, it can be concluded that other factors, such as knowledge of parasitic infections, training in the use of PPE, and access to adequate cleaning facilities, must also be considered to improve the health of waste management officers. Therefore, it is important for the government and related agencies to provide more intensive education about intestinal parasitic infections and proper handling and prevention to waste management officers, in order to create a safer and healthier work environment.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the study found that the use of PPE and personal hygiene did not show a significant relationship with the incidence of intestinal parasitic infections. However, this does not mean that the use of PPE and personal hygiene is not important. On the contrary, it is essential for waste management officers to use PPE and practice good personal hygiene to prevent the transmission of intestinal parasites. Therefore, it is recommended that the government and related agencies provide more intensive education and training to waste management officers on the importance of using PPE and practicing good personal hygiene.
