The Effect of Profitability, Company Size, Financial Leverage, Audit Quality, and Dividend Payout Ratio on Profit Smoothing: A Case Study of Manufacturing Companies Listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (2014-2017)

Introduction

Profit smoothing, also known as income smoothing, is a common practice in the business world where companies manipulate their financial statements to create a more stable picture of their performance. This practice is often used to attract investors, maintain a stable stock price, and avoid financial distress. However, profit smoothing also has ethical implications and regulations that need attention. In this study, we aim to explore the factors that affect the practice of income smoothing in manufacturing companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) during the 2014-2017 period.

Methodology

This study uses a purposive sampling method to select thirty-one manufacturing companies that meet certain criteria to be the object of study. The data analyzed came from the official IDX website, www.idx.co.id, and involved descriptive analysis and hypothesis testing using logistics regression analysis.

Results

The results of this study show that the quality of the audit and dividend payout ratio had a negative but not significant influence on income leveling. Meanwhile, profitability has a positive effect but is also not significant. Interestingly, company size shows a positive and significant effect on income smoothing, while financial leverage shows a negative and significant impact on the practice of income smoothing.

Profitability and Profit Levels

Profitability is often a major indicator in company performance appraisal. The results of this study show that although profitability had a positive effect on income smoothing, the impact was not significant. This might happen because companies that prioritize short-term profits tend not to make profit to increase investor attractiveness.

Company Size

The size of the company is proven to have a significant influence on the practice of income smoothing. Larger companies may have more resources and access to information, so they are more likely to make profit leveling. In addition, large companies often have tighter supervision and high expectations of stakeholders that make them prefer to create a more stable image.

Financial Leverage

In terms of financial leverage, the results show a significant negative effect on income smoothing. This can be interpreted that companies with higher debt tend to have the pressure to maintain liquidity and profitability, which reduces incentives to make profit smoothing. Excessive use of debt can limit the company's ability to carry out accounting maneuvers.

Audit Quality and Dividend Policy

Audit quality also plays an important role, although the effect is negative and insignificant. This shows that high-quality auditors can be a barrier to profit smoothing practice because they are more likely to detect and report profit manipulation. Meanwhile, the Dividend Payout Ratio that has no significant effect may reflect that the dividend policy adopted by the company is not always directly related to accounting decisions related to profit leveling.

Conclusion

This research provides valuable insights on the dynamics that affect the leveling of profit in manufacturing companies listed on the IDX. Understanding these factors, companies and stakeholders can make better decisions in managing profit and investment policies. The results of this study suggest that company size and financial leverage are significant factors that affect the practice of income smoothing, while audit quality and dividend payout ratio have a negative but not significant influence.
