Introduction

Water transportation plays a vital role in the daily lives of people living around Lake Toba, particularly in the city of Balige. As a primary means of transportation for various daily activities and the distribution of agricultural products, water transportation remains a mainstay of local residents. This research aims to evaluate the pattern of movement of people and goods, as well as existing water transport services, with the goal of analyzing the characteristics of travelers and the quality of the water transportation system in the waters of Lake Toba.

Methodology

In this study, researchers employed two data sources: secondary data obtained from related agencies and primary data collected through questionnaires. The questionnaires were distributed to passengers, ship owners, ship managers, and the Transportation Department. Sampling was carried out using the stratified random sampling method, which allows researchers to obtain representative data. Furthermore, the data collected was analyzed using descriptive and chi-square methods.

Results

The results of the analysis show that 80% of passengers using water transportation services are general people, consisting of traders, entrepreneurs, farmers, laborers, and those who do not work. As many as 61% of trips are made for trading purposes, and 95% of all trips are aimed at Balige City. Passengers from Nainggolan amounted to around 26%. In terms of goods, the types of goods most often transported by ships are natural products, groceries, and other household needs. The capacity of the ship used can reach 75-100 passengers with a load of goods 2.0-3.5 tons, and the speed reaches 100 km/hour.

Discussion

Despite the importance of water transportation in the daily lives of people living around Lake Toba, there are significant deficiencies in terms of motor boat facilities. Available facilities are very limited and inadequate to ensure passenger safety. This shows an urgent need to improve safety and comfort standards for water transportation service users.

Conclusion

The conclusion of this study confirms that water transportation services in the southwestern region of Lake Toba are more widely used to meet the needs of people's life. This shows a great potential for further development. Therefore, to stimulate economic growth and ensure better equitable development, it is necessary to have an effort to improve the quality and service of water transportation. This effort will not only benefit the local community, but will also contribute to the progress of tourism and the economy in the Lake Toba region.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Improve the safety and comfort standards of water transportation services by providing adequate facilities and equipment.
Increase the capacity and speed of ships to meet the growing demand for water transportation services.
Develop a comprehensive plan for the development of water transportation services in the Lake Toba region.
Provide training and education for ship owners, managers, and crew members to ensure that they have the necessary skills and knowledge to operate safely and efficiently.

This study has several limitations that should be noted. Firstly, the study only focused on the southwestern region of Lake Toba, and therefore, the findings may not be generalizable to other regions. Secondly, the study relied on secondary and primary data, which may not be comprehensive or accurate. Finally, the study did not consider the impact of water transportation services on the environment and the local community.
