The Relationship between Pain Interference and the Mood of Breast Cancer Patients in Adam Malik Hospital Medan

Introduction

Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in Indonesia, affecting thousands of women every year. Besides fighting against the illness, breast cancer patients often experience pain that interferes with their daily activities. This pain disorder is known as pain interference, which can have a significant impact on the quality of life of patients, including their mood. This study aims to reveal the relationship between pain interference and the mood of breast cancer patients in Adam Malik Hospital Medan.

Background

Breast cancer is a complex disease that affects not only the physical health of patients but also their emotional and psychological well-being. Pain interference is a common symptom experienced by breast cancer patients, which can be caused by various factors such as tumor growth, surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Pain interference can have a significant impact on the quality of life of patients, including their mood, sleep, and daily activities.

Methodology

This study uses a descriptive correlation design with a cross-sectional approach. The research team collects data from 43 breast cancer patients at Adam Malik Hospital Medan through purposive sampling techniques. Data about pain interference is collected using a Brums questionnaire, while the mood is measured using a mood questionnaire. The mood questionnaire reliability used in this study was tested using Cronbach's Alpha and produced a value of 0.936, showing a high level of reliability.

Results

The results showed that most breast cancer patients under study experience pain interference. As many as 69.8% of respondents experienced a mood of enthusiasm. However, bivariate analysis shows a significant relationship between pain interference and mood, with a value of P = 0.00 (<0.5) and the correlation coefficient of 0.612. The value of this correlation coefficient shows a high relationship between the two variables, which means the higher the level of pain interference, the lower the patient's mood.

This finding shows that pain is an important factor that can affect the mood of breast cancer patients. Appropriate intervention is needed to manage pain and improve the patient's mood. Pain management is a complex process that requires a multidisciplinary approach, involving nurses, doctors, psychologists, and physical therapists.
