Introduction

Aluminum Matrix Composite has been widely recognized for its superior mechanical properties compared to aluminum alloys without reinforcement. The addition of silicon carbide (SIC) to aluminum alloys has been a popular method to enhance their mechanical properties. In this study, we explore the use of aluminum 6061, a widely sold aluminum alloy, with variations in adding SIC in the casting process. The method used is Sand Casting, where we observe the effect of variations in adding SIC on several important aspects such as hardness, impact, tensile, bending, and microstructure.

Materials and Methods

The aluminum alloy used in this study is A6061, which is a widely used alloy in various industries. The variations in adding SIC used in this study are 4%, 7%, and 10% with a spinning temperature of 700 °C. The Sand Casting method is used to cast the aluminum alloy with SIC. The hardness test is conducted using the Brinell hardness test (BHN), while the impact test is conducted using the Charpy impact test. The tensile test is conducted using the 100 kN UPH Tarnotest Test, and the bending test is conducted using the three-point bending test. The microstructure observations are conducted using the optical microscope.

Results and Discussion

The results of the hardness test showed that the addition of 4% SIC produced the highest hardness with a value of 56.94 BHN. This number shows that the existence of SIC in the right amount can strengthen the structure of aluminum, increase resistance to deformation. In addition, the maximum impact value is recorded in the 4% SIC variation in the top position of the castings, which reaches 10.37 J/mm². This indicates that reinforcement with SIC not only increases hardness but also resistance to collisions.

In tensile testing, it was carried out using the 100 kN UPH Tarnotest Test, and the results showed the biggest elongation occurred in 4% SIC variation. This shows that the combination of SIC and Aluminum 6061 in this proportion still maintains a good plasticity despite experiencing reinforcement. Whereas in the bending test, the highest shear voltage value is also obtained in a 4% SIC variation, which is 434.37 N/mm², showing good strength in holding the tensile force.

Through microstructure observations, it was found that the addition of SICs affected micro structure in aluminum 6061. With the increase in SIC levels, it appears that the number of micro-structures and silicone eutectics also increases and is more dense. This shows that SIC plays an important role in increasing the stability of the metal structure.

Optimum Point of SIC Addition

However, this study confirmed that the addition of SIC more than 4% did not show a significant increase in mechanical properties. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is an optimum point in the use of SIC as an amplifier in aluminum 6061 with the sand casting method, which is at 4% level. Excessive increase can actually interfere with favorable mechanical properties.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the addition of SIC to Aluminum 6061 provides a significant contribution to the increase in mechanical properties, especially at 4% levels. This research not only opens the way for the development of better composite materials, but also provides important information for industries that rely on the superiority of the mechanical properties of aluminum alloy materials in technical and construction applications.

Future Work

Future work can be done to explore the effect of different types of SIC on the mechanical properties of aluminum 6061. Additionally, the effect of different casting methods on the mechanical properties of aluminum 6061 with SIC can also be explored.

Microstructure Observations

The microstructure observations showed that the addition of SIC affected the microstructure of aluminum 6061. With the increase in SIC levels, it appears that the number of micro-structures and silicone eutectics also increases and is more dense. This shows that SIC plays an important role in increasing the stability of the metal structure.
