Introduction

Peat water, abundant in most of Kalimantan and Sumatra, has great potential as a source of raw water. However, the high organic content and heavy metals make peat water not suitable for consumption without processing in advance. To speed up the coagulation and flocculation process, aluminum sulfate solution (17% alum) was added to a sample at a dose of 10 ml/liter of sample, equivalent to 1000 ppm of alum.

Results and Discussion

The model trial results showed an increase in pH close to neutral and a significant decrease in color, turbidity, COD, BOD, total organic, and metal content of Al, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cd, and Cu. This indicates that this electrocoagulation model is capable of producing clean water that is suitable for consumption from peat water. The results of this study show that the electrocoagulation method is effective in removing impurities from peat water and producing clean water.
