Introduction

The base rot disease of the stem in oil palm plants caused by the fungus Ganoderma Boninense is a serious threat to oil palm plantations worldwide. The use of chemical fungicides such as hexakonazole is effective in controlling this disease, but sustainable use can have a negative impact on the environment and health. Therefore, the search for alternative environmentally friendly disease control methods is crucial. This study aims to test the effectiveness of Trichodermin, a kind of biofungicide, in inhibiting the growth of Ganoderma Boninense in oil palm plants.

Ganoderma Boninense is a fungus that causes base rot disease in oil palm plants, leading to significant economic losses in the oil palm industry. The use of chemical fungicides such as hexakonazole is a common practice to control this disease. Materials and Methods

This study was conducted at the Plant Pathology Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra. The study used a random design with five treatments and four replications. The five treatments used include:

Control: Without Trichodermin and without fungicide
Trichodermin 10-1: Trichodermin at a concentration of 10-1
Trichodermin 10-2: Trichodermin at a concentration of 10-2
Trichodermin 10-3: Trichodermin at a concentration of 10-3
Hexakonazole Fungicide: Hexakonazole fungicide at a standard concentration

The study used oil palm plants as the test material, and the growth of Ganoderma Boninense was observed and measured. The results were analyzed using statistical methods to determine the effectiveness of Trichodermin in inhibiting the growth of Ganoderma Boninense.

Results

The results of the study showed that Trichodermin had a very significant effect on all observed parameters. The largest mushroom colony with an area of 55,129 cm2 was observed in the control group (without Trichodermin and without fungicide), while the smallest mushroom colony with an area of 33,916 cm2 was observed in the Trichodermin group 10-1. The highest percentage of fungal growth acceleration (96.428%) was observed in the fungicide groups, while the percentage of the lowest fungal growth acceleration (42.587%) was observed in the Trichodermin 10-2 group.

The highest percentage of mushroom growth inhibition (65.560%) was observed in the Trichodermin group 10-2, while the percentage of the lowest fungal growth inhibition (3.573%) was observed in the fungicide groups. The ratio of the highest mushroom growth acceleration (1 cm) was observed in the control group, while the ratio of the lowest fungal growth acceleration (0.925 cm) was observed in the Trichodermin 10-1 group.

Discussion

The results of this study indicate that Trichodermin is proven to be effective in inhibiting the growth of Ganoderma Boninense. The effectiveness of Trichodermin in controlling the base rot disease of the stem in oil palm plants opens opportunities to develop a more environmentally friendly and sustainable disease control strategy. The use of Trichodermin as a biofungicide can reduce the reliance on chemical fungicides and minimize the negative impacts on the environment and human health.

Conclusion

This study demonstrates the effectiveness of Trichodermin in inhibiting the growth of Ganoderma Boninense in oil palm plants. The results of this study provide valuable information for the development of a more environmentally friendly and sustainable disease control strategy for oil palm plantations.
