Introduction

Diabetes mellitus is a disease that has garnered significant attention in Indonesia, with a recorded 6.7% mortality rate, ranking the country fifth in the world with a staggering 19.5 million people suffering from the condition. The number is expected to rise to 28.6 million by 2045. In the Padangmatinggi Health Center, a total of 438 cases of diabetes mellitus were reported in 2021, making it one of the puskesmas with the highest number of sufferers. This study aims to determine the relationship between family history, eating patterns, and physical activity of blood sugar levels in people with type II diabetes mellitus.

Background of the Study

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease characterized by high blood sugar levels, which can lead to various complications if left untreated. The disease is often associated with a family history of diabetes, unhealthy eating patterns, and a sedentary lifestyle. In Indonesia, diabetes mellitus is a significant public health concern, with a high prevalence rate and a growing number of cases. The Padangmatinggi Health Center, being one of the puskesmas with the highest number of diabetes cases, presents an opportunity to investigate the relationship between family history, eating patterns, and physical activity with blood sugar levels in people with type II diabetes mellitus.

Methodology

This study employed an analytic research design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 142 respondents, consisting of patients with normal blood sugar levels and patients with high blood sugar levels, were selected through purposive sampling. Data was collected through a questionnaire and subsequently analyzed descriptively for univariate data, while bivariate data was analyzed using a chi-square test with a 95% confidence level.

Results

The results of the data processing show a significant relationship between the family history of diabetes (p = 0.038), diet (p = 0.001), and physical activity (p = 0.001) with blood sugar levels in people with diabetes mellitus type II, especially for those aged over 40 years. This finding confirms the importance of the application of a healthy lifestyle, which includes consumption of balanced nutritious eating patterns and doing regular physical activity every day.

The results of this study highlight the significance of family history, eating patterns, and physical activity in determining blood sugar levels in people with type II diabetes mellitus. The findings suggest that individuals with a family history of diabetes, unhealthy eating patterns, and a sedentary lifestyle are at a higher risk of developing high blood sugar levels.
