Introduction

Primary phytoplankton productivity is a crucial parameter that describes the level of production of organic matter through the photosynthesis process in aquatic ecosystems. The level of primary productivity in waters can provide an overview of how productive a water body is in producing organic matter and the supply of oxygen produced by the process of photosynthesis. This study aims to determine the level of primary phytoplankton productivity produced by Sialang Fruit Coastal waters and analyze the relationship between primary phytoplankton productivity and the physical-chemical condition of aquatic chemistry.

Methodology

This research was conducted in the waters of Sialang Buah Beach, Serdang Bedagai Regency, from January to February 2022. Measurement of primary phytoplankton productivity was carried out using bright and dark bottle methods. The bright bottle method measures the rate of photosynthesis, while the dark bottle method measures the rate of respiration. The analysis of the relationship between primary productivity and environmental parameters was carried out by analysis of the main components (PCA).

Results

The results showed that the level of phytoplankton primary productivity ranged from 543,313 mgc/m³/day, which is classified in the category of mesotrophic waters (waters with moderate nutrient elements), up to 774,375 mgc/m³/day, which is classified as eutrophic waters (waters with high nutrient levels). The value of phytoplankton abundance ranges from 76,730 to 82.201 individuals/liters, included in the category of moderate abundance.

PCA Analysis

PCA analysis shows that primary productivity has a very strong positive correlation with the abundance of phytoplankton, as well as a strong positive relationship with dissolved oxygen, nitrate, and phosphate. Conversely, primary productivity also shows a very strong negative correlation with acidity (pH) and has a strong negative relationship with brightness and salinity.

Data obtained from this study provides important insights for the management and protection of marine ecosystems on Sialang Buah Beach. The identified primary productivity category shows that these waters have good potential to support aquatic life.
