Introduction

Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) are a common occupational health problem that affects millions of workers worldwide. MSDs are complaints that occur in joints, ligaments, and tendons caused by static loads received by muscles repeatedly and continuously for a long time. In 2016, the activity of slaughtering the Sanjai Balado Ananda Chips Sweet Potato in Bukittinggi experienced problems related to work posture that was not ergonomic. This poor work posture has the potential to cause muscle and skeletal disorders, or known as Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDS). Therefore, it is essential to investigate the relationship between work posture and musculoskeletal complaints in slaughterhouse workers.

Background

The Sanjai Balado Ananda Chips Sweet Potato industry in Bukittinggi is a significant contributor to the local economy. However, the industry has faced challenges related to work posture, which has led to musculoskeletal complaints among workers. Musculoskeletal disorders are a significant occupational health problem that can lead to absenteeism, reduced productivity, and increased healthcare costs. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate the relationship between work posture and musculoskeletal complaints in slaughterhouse workers.

Methodology

This study was conducted with an analytical survey approach using cross-sectional designs. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between work posture and complaints of musculoskeletal in slaughterhouse slaughtering workers in Sanjai Balado Ananda. The research sample consists of 7 people, which is the total population of the crops worker. Data regarding work posture is collected through the Quick Exposure Check (QEC) method, while the level of complaints of musculoskeletal is assessed using the Standard Nordic Questionnaire (SNQ) questionnaire. For statistical analysis, the Chi-Square test is used with the help of SPSS 16.

Results

The results showed a significant relationship between work posture and musculoskeletal complaints, with the value of P = 0.029 (p <0.05) obtained from the Fisher's Exact Test test. Of the 7 workers, there are 3 workers (42.9%) who are in the category of moderate work posture, who require action in the near future, and 4 workers (57.1%) in the high category, which requires immediate action. On the other hand, the results of the SNQ questionnaire also showed that 3 workers (42.9%) experienced complaints of musculoskeletal in the medium category, while 4 workers (57.1%) were in the high category.

Discussion

The results of this study indicate a significant relationship between work posture and musculoskeletal complaints in slaughterhouse workers. The findings suggest that workers who have poor work posture are more likely to experience musculoskeletal complaints. This is consistent with previous studies that have shown a link between poor work posture and musculoskeletal disorders.

Conclusion

Based on these findings, it is recommended that workers take advantage of rest time to relax to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal disorders. In addition, for further research, it is recommended that modification of chairs and crowning devices be made to be in accordance with the anthropometry of the worker's body. It is also essential to increase awareness of ergonomics in the workplace to reduce the risk of MSDs. Through improving work postures and the application of ergonomic tools, it is expected that the quality of work and health of workers can improve.

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Improve work posture: Workers should take advantage of rest time to relax to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal disorders.
Modify chairs and crowning devices: Modification of chairs and crowning devices should be made to be in accordance with the anthropometry of the worker's body.
Increase awareness of ergonomics: It is essential to increase awareness of ergonomics in the workplace to reduce the risk of MSDs.
Further research: Further research is needed to investigate the relationship between work posture and musculoskeletal complaints in slaughterhouse workers.

Limitations

This study has several limitations. The sample size is small, and the study was conducted in a single slaughterhouse. Therefore, the findings may not be generalizable to other slaughterhouses or industries. Additionally, the study only investigated the relationship between work posture and musculoskeletal complaints and did not explore other factors that may contribute to MSDs.
