Manufacture and Characterization of Acetate Cellulose Film from Palm Oil (Elaeis guinensis Jacq) with Chloroform Solvent and Plasticizer Triaasetin

Introduction

The increasing demand for sustainable and environmentally friendly materials has led to the exploration of alternative sources for cellulose production. One such source is oil palm (Elaeis guinensis Jacq), a widely cultivated crop in tropical regions. In this study, we aim to manufacture and characterize acetate cellulose films from oil palm wood using chloroform solvents and plasticizer triaasetin. The research process involves four stages: cellulose isolation, modification of cellulose structure, mixing with triasetin, and printing of cellulose acetate films through the evaporation process.

Materials and Methods

The research process consists of four stages:

Cellulose Isolation: Cellulose was isolated from oil palm wood using a combination of mechanical and chemical methods.
Modification of Cellulose Structure: The isolated cellulose was modified using glacial acetic acid and concentrated sulfuric acid to enhance its reactivity.
Mixing with Triaasetin: The modified cellulose was mixed with triasetin in varying proportions (0, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 ml) to evaluate its effect on the properties of cellulose acetate films.
Printing of Cellulose Acetate Films: The cellulose acetate films were printed through the evaporation process to produce thin films.

Characterization of Acetate Cellulose Films

The resulting acetate cellulose films were characterized using various methods, including:

FT-IR (Fourier-Infrared Transformation): The FT-IR spectrum of cellulose isolation indicates the presence of functional groups such as O-H, C-H, and C = O at specific wave numbers (3410.15 cm-1, 2900.94 cm-1, and 1620.21 cm-1). The cellulose acetate film shows similar wave numbers (3471.87 cm-1, 2962.66 cm-1, 1751.36 cm-1, and 1234.44 cm-1), indicating the presence of O-H, C-H functional group, C = O, and C-O.
Tensile Test (UTM): The mechanical analysis shows that the highest modulus Young value is achieved in a ratio of 1.8 Ca/1.0 TA (B/V) with a value of 4289.8 MPa, indicating an increase in the tensile strength of the acetate cellulose film with the addition of triaasetin.
Thermal Analysis (TGA): The thermal analysis shows that the thermal degradation of the mixture can be divided into four stages, reflecting differences in behavior at different temperatures. The addition of triaasetin plasticizer significantly increases the thermal stability of the acetate cellulose film, making it more resistant to temperature changes.
Electron Scanner Microscopy (SEM): The SEM analysis shows that the acetate cellulose film has a smooth surface with small and homogeneous pores, indicating that triaasetin not only functions as a plasticizer but also contributes to creating a more stable and uniform structure in the cellulose acetate film.

Results and Discussion

The results of this study reveal the potential for the use of oil palm wood as a source of acetate cellulose that can be modified to produce high-quality films. The addition of plasticizers such as triaasetin plays an important role in improving the physical and thermal nature of the film.
