Effect of Giving Purple Sweet Potato Tapper Extract (Ipomoiea Batatas L) on Glutation Peroxidase (GPX) and Histopathology of Kidney Mice (Mus Musculus L) After Maximum Physical Exercise

Introduction

Maximum physical exercise is a common activity that many people engage in to improve their physical health and well-being. However, excessive physical exercise can lead to the production of free radicals, which can cause oxidative stress and damage to various organs, including the kidneys. Background

Maximum physical exercise is known to increase the production of free radicals due to increased metabolism of the body. As a result, blood flow and metabolism in the kidneys have decreased, which can cause the formation of free radicals in this organ. Free radicals formed will cause an imbalance between prooxidants and antioxidants in the body, especially decreased activity of the enzyme glutation peroxidase (GPX). This decrease in GPX activity contributes to increased oxidative stress, which in turn can damage kidney tissue. Therefore, the provision of exogenous antioxidants, such as purple sweet potato tubers extract, can be recommended to avoid tissue damage due to the effects of free radicals.

Research Methods

This study was conducted using 30 adult male white mice from the DD Webster strain, with a post-test only control group research design. The mice are divided into six groups, each consisting of five tails. After treatment, one group of mice was given purple sweet potato tubers before undergoing swimming activities to fatigue, while other groups were not given extracts. Then the kidney organs are taken to measure the activity of the enzyme glutation peroxidase. In addition, the control group was also examined with and without giving the same extract. After that, the degree of kidney damage to mice is assessed to analyze the impact of the treatment given.

Materials and Methods

Animals: 30 adult male white mice from the DD Webster strain were used in this study.
Experimental Design: Post-test only control group research design was used in this study.
Treatment: One group of mice was given purple sweet potato tubers before undergoing swimming activities to fatigue, while other groups were not given extracts.

Results and Analysis

The results showed that there were no significant differences in the activity of the enzyme glutation peroxidase (P> 0.05). However, there is a significant difference in the degree of mice kidney damage (p <0.05). This shows that although the administration of purple sweet potato tubers is not successful in increasing GPX activity, it is possible that the extract is not strong enough to repair kidney damage caused by oxidative stress due to maximum physical exercise.

Discussion

The results of this study suggest that the administration of purple sweet potato tubers does not have a significant effect in increasing the activity of the enzyme glutation peroxidase and is unable to repair kidney damage in male mice which undergoes maximum physical exercise. This study opens up space for further research on the effectiveness and mechanism of action of various types of natural antioxidants in dealing with oxidative stress, especially in the context of post-training kidney tissue rehabilitation. By continuing to explore this possibility, we can develop a more effective strategy to mitigate the negative effects of physical exercise on kidney health.

Conclusion

Based on the findings of this study, it can be concluded that the administration of purple sweet potato tubers (Ipomoea Batatas L) does not have a significant effect in increasing the activity of the enzyme glutation peroxidase and is unable to repair kidney damage in male mice (Mus Musculus L) which undergoes maximum physical exercise. This study opens up space for further research on the effectiveness and mechanism of action of various types of natural antioxidants in dealing with oxidative stress, especially in the context of post-training kidney tissue rehabilitation.
