Introduction

In today's digital age, the way people search for information has undergone significant changes. The rise of digital natives, individuals born and raised in a world with the internet and digital technology, has led to a new generation of information seekers. This study aims to explore the search behavior of information conducted by digital natives students, with a focus on students of class X Social Sciences Interest (MIS) at SMA Negeri 13 Medan. The research method used is a descriptive method involving a population of 53 students.

Methodology

The research method used in this study is a descriptive method, which involves collecting and analyzing data to describe the characteristics of a particular population. In this case, the population consists of 53 students from SMA Negeri 13 Medan. The authors used non-probability sampling techniques with a purposive or judgmental approach, namely the selection of samples based on certain criteria. Data collection is carried out through a questionnaire, which is then processed and presented in the form of frequency distribution. Data interpretation is done by calculating the percentage of each answer given by the respondent.

Results

The results of this study showed that around 65% of the information search behavior model put forward by Marchionini in harmony with the search behavior of digital natives student information in SMA Negeri 13 Medan. These students show high awareness of information needs, which are affected by the motivation of themselves and questions raised by the teacher. They tend to conduct interviews or ask questions to people who are more experienced and choose information search systems by referring to books and encyclopedias.

Information Search Process

The information search process carried out by students includes several steps, including formulating queries with the help of a dictionary and choosing the right vocabulary. They also take advantage of the features in books such as titles, indexes, table of contents, and keywords to speed up the search. In the early stages, students tend to use cellphones to find information, then turn to the internet to deepen the search.

Assessing the Quality of Information

Students also show accuracy in assessing the quality of information found, by examining bibliography and relevant types of documents. The information filtering process takes place through reading, copying information on paper, and scanning and recording bibliography, so that the data collected is relevant to their needs. After getting the necessary information, they stop the search and print the search results of the information.

Overall, this research provides in-depth insight into the search behavior of student information classified as digital natives. This result is proof that students in the digital era today are not only accustomed to using technology, but are also able to manage and filter information critically. Thus, this finding can be a consideration for educators in developing teaching methods that are more relevant to the characteristics of the current young generation. Good information search skills are very important to face challenges in the world that are increasingly dependent on information and digital technology.
