Introduction

People's goat farming in Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra, is a sector that has great potential in improving the community's economy. The sector has been growing rapidly in recent years, driven by the increasing demand for goat meat and dairy products. However, despite its potential, the sector still faces several challenges, including limited technical knowledge, inadequate infrastructure, and lack of access to markets. In this study, we aim to analyze the technical aspects of goat farming in Deli Serdang Regency and formulate appropriate development strategies to improve the sector's productivity and sustainability.

Methodology

The study was conducted using a mixed-methods approach, combining both qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis methods. A questionnaire was designed based on the Good Dairy Farming Practice (GDFP) criteria, which refers to the standards set by the FAO (2011). The questionnaire was distributed to 100 people's goat farmers in Deli Serdang Regency, and the results were analyzed to identify the current conditions of goat farming in the area.

In addition to the questionnaire, the study also used the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method to determine the weight and value of each aspect analyzed. The AHP method helps in organizing information and decision making rationally, and it was used to identify the most critical aspects of goat farming in Deli Serdang Regency.

Results

The results of the study showed that the average GDFP value on the people's goat farm in Deli Serdang was included in the category quite well. The highest value is found in the aspect of feed and drinking water with a score of 3.30, which is included in the good category. Conversely, the health aspect of livestock gets the lowest value, which is 2.80, which is classified as good but still needs improvement.

The AHP analysis also showed that the most critical aspects of goat farming in Deli Serdang Regency are feed and drinking water, health, and breeding. These aspects were identified as the most critical because they have the highest weight and value in the AHP analysis.

The results of the study suggest that the people's goat farming sector in Deli Serdang Regency has great potential for development. However, the sector still faces several challenges, including limited technical knowledge, inadequate infrastructure, and lack of access to markets. To address these challenges, several strategies can be identified, including:

Increasing the scale of maintenance economy

By increasing business scale, farmers can achieve cost efficiency and increase production results. This can be achieved through the use of modern technology, such as automated feeding systems and breeding programs.

Intensive Training and Counseling

Increasing the technical capacity of farmers through training programs that focus on maintenance techniques, livestock health management, and effective marketing techniques. This can be achieved through the establishment of training centers and the provision of training materials.

Competitive marketing system

Develop a better market network to increase the competitiveness of community farm products. This can be achieved through the establishment of marketing cooperatives and the provision of market information.

Collaboration between breeders

Encourage farmers to collaborate in business groups, so that they can share knowledge and resources. This can be achieved through the establishment of business groups and the provision of support services.

Conclusion

The study suggests that the people's goat farming sector in Deli Serdang Regency has great potential for development. However, the sector still faces several challenges, including limited technical knowledge, inadequate infrastructure, and lack of access to markets.
