Introduction

The Islamic banking industry in Indonesia has experienced significant growth in recent years, driven by increasing demand for Sharia-compliant financial services. However, the industry also faces challenges in managing profit distribution, which is a critical aspect of Islamic banking. This study aims to analyze the effect of market share, syirkah funds, and investment risk reserves on profit distribution management in Islamic banks in Indonesia.

Literature Review

Islamic banking is based on the principles of Sharia law, which prohibits the collection and payment of interest (riba). Instead, Islamic banks use profit-sharing contracts, such as mudarabah and musharakah, to share profits with their customers. Syirkah funds, which are a type of profit-sharing contract, play a crucial role in Islamic banking. However, the effectiveness of syirkah funds in managing profit distribution is still a topic of debate.

Market share is another important factor that affects profit distribution management in Islamic banks. A higher market share can lead to increased profitability and profit distribution, but it can also lead to increased competition and reduced profit margins. Investment risk reserves, which are set aside to cover potential losses, are also an important factor in managing profit distribution.

Methodology

This study uses a descriptive quantitative approach with secondary data taken from the Annual Report of 12 Sharia Commercial Banks (BUS) registered in the Financial Services Authority (OJK) during the 2014-2018 period. The selection of samples using the purposive sampling method, namely by selecting a bank that consistently issued an annual report.

Results

The results of this study showed that simultaneously, all independent variables (market share, syirkah funds, the effectiveness of syirkah funds, asset compositions, capital adequacy, market concentration, and bank age) had a significant effect on profit distribution management.

Deeper Analysis

Market Share (PP) and Effectiveness of Syirkah Fund (EDS): Having a negative influence on profit distribution management. This indicates that the greater the market share and the more effective syirkah funds, the banks tend to be more conservative in distributing profits.

Syirkah Dana (DS), Asset Composition (KA), Capital Adequacy (KM), Market Concentration (KP), and Bank Age (UB): Has a positive influence on Profit Distribution Management. That is, the greater the syirkah funds, the better the composition of the asset, the higher the capital adequacy, the more concentrated market, and the older the bank's age, the banks tend to be more aggressive in distributing profits.

This study also found that Investment Risk Reserves (CRI) played a significant role as a moderator in the relationship between several independent variables and profit distribution management.

Implications and Recommendations

The results of this study have several implications and recommendations for Islamic banks in Indonesia:

Risk Management Strategy: Islamic banks need to pay attention to investment risk management by considering the amount of investment risk reserves allocated. Adequate investment risk reserves can be an important factor in determining the profit distribution strategy.

Increasing the Efficiency of Syirkah Funds: Islamic banks need to continue to improve the efficiency of the use of syirkah funds in order to have a greater positive impact on profitability and profit distribution.

Utilizing Market Share: Islamic banks need to formulate the right strategy to increase market share and use it optimally to increase profitability and profit distribution.

Conclusion

This study contributes to understanding the factors that influence the management of earnings distribution in Islamic banks in Indonesia. The results of this study can be taken into consideration for stakeholders in determining appropriate strategies and policies to support the growth and sustainability of the Islamic banking industry in Indonesia.

Limitations of the Study

This study has several limitations. Firstly, the study only focuses on 12 Sharia Commercial Banks in Indonesia, which may not be representative of the entire Islamic banking industry in Indonesia. Secondly, the study only uses secondary data, which may not capture the nuances of the relationship between the independent variables and profit distribution management.

Future Research Directions

Future research can build on the findings of this study by exploring the following research directions:

Investigating the impact of other factors, such as regulatory environment and economic conditions, on profit distribution management in Islamic banks in Indonesia.
Examining the relationship between syirkah funds and profit distribution management in other countries.
Developing a more comprehensive model of profit distribution management in Islamic banks in Indonesia.
