The Influence of Individual Factors and Psychological Factors on the Performance of Implementing Nurses in the Surgical Inpatient Room: A Case Study of Nosocomial Infections in Dr. Pirngadi Regional Hospital Medan City

Introduction

Nosocomial infections are a serious health problem that affects hospitals worldwide. In Indonesia, the Dr. Pirngadi Regional Hospital in Medan City has reported a high incidence of nosocomial infections in the surgical inpatient room, with a rate of 25.4% in 2008-2009. This study aims to investigate the influence of individual and psychological factors on the performance of nurses in preventing nosocomial infections in the surgical inpatient room of Dr. Pirngadi Regional Hospital in 2010.

Background

Nosocomial infections are infections that are acquired in hospitals and other healthcare facilities. They can be caused by a variety of factors, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi. In the surgical inpatient room, nosocomial infections can be particularly problematic, as patients are often immunocompromised and have a higher risk of developing infections. The high incidence of nosocomial infections in Dr. Pirngadi Regional Hospital has raised concerns about the performance of nurses in preventing these infections.

Methodology

This study used a quantitative approach to investigate the influence of individual and psychological factors on the performance of nurses in preventing nosocomial infections. The study population consisted of all 35 nurses who worked in the surgical inpatient room of Dr. Pirngadi Regional Hospital. Data was collected through questionnaire-based interviews and analyzed using multiple regression tests with a significance level of α = 0.05.

Results

The results of this study showed that individual factors, such as age, education, and length of work, had a significant effect on the performance of nurses in preventing nosocomial infections (p < 0.05). However, sex variables did not show a significant effect. Psychological factors, including perception, attitude, personality, and motivation, were also found to have a significant influence on the performance of nurses (p < 0.05). Among all the variables studied, education was found to be the most dominant factor.

Discussion

The results of this study provide important insights for the management of Dr. Pirngadi Regional Hospital to take steps to improve the performance of nurses in preventing nosocomial infections. The study highlights the importance of individual and psychological factors in determining the performance of nurses. Education was found to be the most dominant factor, suggesting that increasing the education and training of nurses may be an effective way to improve their performance.

Recommendations

Based on the results of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Increase the role of the Nosocomial Infection Prevention Committee: The management of Dr. Pirngadi Regional Hospital should increase the role of the Nosocomial Infection Prevention Committee as a facility to develop and control the performance of nurses in minimizing cases of infection, both in patients and health workers.
Hold education and training on the prevention of nosocomial infections: The hospital should hold regular education and training sessions for junior nurses, especially those who work in the surgical inpatient room, on the prevention of nosocomial infections.
Develop the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) of Nosocomial Infection Prevention: The hospital should develop a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the prevention of nosocomial infections, which refers to the SOP issued by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia.

Conclusion

This study highlights the importance of individual and psychological factors in determining the performance of nurses in preventing nosocomial infections. The results of this study provide important insights for the management of Dr. Pirngadi Regional Hospital to take steps to improve the performance of nurses in preventing nosocomial infections. By paying attention to these two aspects, it is expected that the performance of nurses can increase and the number of nosocomial infections can be reduced significantly.

Additional Analysis

Facing the high number of nosocomial infections is not only a technical challenge, but also a challenge in terms of humans and organizations. The nurse's performance is very dependent on the combination of individual and psychological factors that interact with each other. For example, nurses who have higher education tend to better understand and apply infection prevention procedures better. Sustainable education and regular training are the key to strengthening nurses' abilities, so they can do their duties well.

Psychological factors such as motivation and attitude should not be ignored. Nurses who feel valued and have a positive attitude towards their work are more potential to take more effective precautions. Thus, creating a work environment that supports and gives awards to nurses' achievements can contribute to the improvement of their performance.

Therefore, efforts to reduce nosocomial infections at Dr. Pirngadi must involve a holistic approach. Not only does it focus on technical aspects, but also understand and overcome the psychological factors that affect nurses. By paying attention to these two aspects, it is expected that the performance of nurses can increase and the number of nosocomial infections can be reduced significantly.

Limitations of the Study

This study has several limitations. Firstly, the study only focused on the individual and psychological factors that affect the performance of nurses in preventing nosocomial infections. Other factors, such as the hospital's policies and procedures, may also play a role in determining the performance of nurses. Secondly, the study only included nurses who worked in the surgical inpatient room, and may not be generalizable to other healthcare settings.

Future research should aim to investigate the impact of other factors, such as hospital policies and procedures, on the performance of nurses in preventing nosocomial infections. Additionally, research should be conducted to explore the effectiveness of education and training programs in improving the performance of nurses in preventing nosocomial infections.
