Digital Gaps in S1 Students of Management Sciences Faculty of Economics and Business, University of North Sumatra, class of 2017

Introduction

In today's digital era, the ability to use digital tools is no longer a luxury, but a necessity for students to succeed in their academic and professional careers. The Faculty of Economics and Business, University of North Sumatra, class of 2017, is not an exception. This study aims to explore the digital gaps experienced by S1 students in the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of North Sumatra, class of 2017. The research population includes all S1 students in the 2017 class of management, which amounted to 199 people. To get more accurate data, the determination of the sample was carried out using a total sampling technique, meaning that all members of the population were used as research samples.

Methodology

The method used in this study is a descriptive method, which allows researchers to provide a clear picture of the digital conditions of students. Data collection is done using the Guttman scale, which can measure how well the ability of students to use various digital tools. The Guttman scale is a type of scale that measures the ability of students to use digital tools by asking a series of questions that assess their skills and knowledge.

Results

The results of this study showed that almost half (38%) of respondents said they had a good internet network in supporting learning activities. This illustrates that adequate internet access is an important factor in the learning process, especially in the current digital era. Furthermore, all respondents (100%) said they had good abilities in using Microsoft Word to process words, showing that they were familiar with basic applications that were often used in academic activities.

However, on the other hand, almost half (33%) respondents claimed to have good ability to use Microsoft PowerPoint to make a presentation. This figure shows that although most students are able to use presentation tools, there is space to improve in terms of visual presentation skills. Additionally, almost half (45%) of respondents stated good capabilities in using database proquest. This data shows the gap in the use of digital resources that may be caused by lack of socialization or training on academic databases.

Most respondents (75%) have good ability to use the library web, and overall (100%) respondents claimed to be able to use the library web well. This is an indication that students are not only able to access information, but also use it effectively to support the teaching and learning process.

Discussion

From the results of this study, it can be concluded that although the undergraduate students of the management of the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of North Sumatra, class of 2017 show good abilities in the use of certain digital tools, there are several areas that need to be improved. This digital gap must be a concern, especially in an effort to improve student competence to be better prepared to face challenges in the increasingly technology-based world of work.

Recommendations

Based on the results of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Improving digital literacy: The university should provide training and socialization on the use of digital tools, especially for students who are not familiar with them.
Enhancing visual presentation skills: The university should provide training and workshops on visual presentation skills, especially for students who are not familiar with Microsoft PowerPoint.
Improving access to digital resources: The university should provide access to digital resources, such as academic databases, and provide training on how to use them effectively.
Encouraging the use of digital tools: The university should encourage students to use digital tools in their academic and professional careers, and provide incentives for students who are able to use them effectively.

By addressing the digital gaps experienced by S1 students in the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of North Sumatra, class of 2017, the university can improve student competence and prepare more competitive graduates in the digital age.
