Introduction

The level of nosocomial infection in Indonesia is relatively high, with surgical wound infections as one of the most common. This is exacerbated by increasing bacterial resistance due to excessive use of antibiotics. Therefore, it is essential to identify the bacterial patterns and sensitivity tests in the Obgyn Surgery Room of the General Hospital Adam Malik Center Medan to determine the most effective antibiotics for prevention before surgery.

Methodology

This study aimed to identify the bacterial patterns and sensitivity tests in the Obgyn Surgery Room of the General Hospital Adam Malik Center Medan. The study used a descriptive approach, where sampling was carried out on bacterial contaminants in the air surgical space before surgery for two weeks (10 working days). The "Settled Down Plate" technique with Blood Agar Media was used to collect bacterial samples. Bacterial samples from the patient's wound stroke that underwent surgery were also taken. The bacteria that were grown were then colored by the Gram Staining method and a sensitivity test on several types of antibiotics was carried out.

Results

The results of this study showed the presence of bacterial contamination in the air operating room. The most commonly found bacteria were coagulase-negative staphylococcus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Bacillus subtilis. The average growth of these bacteria reaches 12 colonies forming units (CFU)/plates after 24 hours and 19 CFU/plate after 48 hours. The sensitivity test shows that most of the commonly used antibiotics are still effective, except Cefazoline. Of the 11 patient's surgical wounds, only 2 showed the growth of bacteria.

The results of this study indicate that bacterial contamination in the air operating room is a significant concern. The presence of coagulase-negative staphylococcus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Bacillus subtilis in the air operating room suggests that these bacteria can be transmitted to patients undergoing surgery.
