Introduction

Garbage is a major environmental issue that affects not only the health of humans but also the quality of the environment. The Pringgan Market in Medan City is one of the markets that produce a significant amount of waste, which is often found scattered around the market area. This study aims to analyze the implementation of waste management and traders' participation in creating a clean environment in the Pringgan Market in 2019.

Methodology

The method used in this study is a descriptive survey, which involves collecting data through questionnaires and observations. The population studied was all traders in the Pringgan Market, totaling 278 people, with 74 traders as samples. The sampling technique used is accidental sampling, which is choosing the available respondents. The data collected includes demographic information, such as age, gender, and education level, as well as information on waste management practices, including storage, collection, transportation, disposal, and management of waste.

Results

The results of this study showed that the Pringgan Market produced waste as much as 11.88 m³ per day, which if calculated in a year to around 4,336.2 m³. Of the 74 traders who were sampled, as many as 45 people (60.8%) were women, and the majority of traders were aged between 41-50 years (39 people or 52.7%). The most common type of business is vegetable traders, which reached 27 people (36.5%). The average education of traders is a junior high school graduate, as many as 29 people (39%).

In the analysis of waste management in the Pringgan Market, it was found that the storage and collection of waste is in a bad category, while waste transportation is included in the good category. However, the disposal and management of waste is also declared bad. In general, traders' participation in the provision of trash bins is relatively low, namely 64 people (88.5%) in the bad category. On the other hand, traders' participation in garbage disposal shows better results, with 39 people (52.7%) participating well, and all traders (74 people or 100%) pay good cleaning fees. However, traders' participation in complying with hygiene regulations is very low, with all traders (74 people) in the bad category.

The results of this study highlight the importance of effective waste management and traders' participation in creating a clean environment in the Pringgan Market.
