Determinants of Searching for Treatment to Penang Malaysia in the Community in East Aceh Regency in 2008

Introduction

The search for health services is a fundamental need for every individual to receive good medical care. In Indonesia, especially in East Aceh Regency, there is an interesting phenomenon related to the search for health services. One of these phenomena is the desire of the community to look for hospitals abroad, such as in Penang, Malaysia. This study aims to analyze the factors that influence the search for health services in East Aceh Regency, Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam.

Background

The search for health services is a complex process that involves various factors, including the perception of health facilities, nurse services, doctor services, administrative services, health service fees, pain relief, the category of disease, and experience in getting health services. In Indonesia, the search for health services is often influenced by the availability and quality of health services, as well as the cost of treatment. The desire of the community to look for hospitals abroad, such as in Penang, Malaysia, is a reflection of the limitations of domestic health services.

Methodology

This study uses an explanatory research method with a population consisting of people who have received health services at Penang-Malaysia Hospital in 2007-2008. As many as 45 people were sampled in this study. The data used is primary data collected through questionnaires, observations, and secondary data. Data analysis was carried out using the Chi-Square test at a 95% confidence level.

Results

The results showed that there were a number of factors that were significantly related to the search pattern of health services to Penang-Malaysia Hospital. Among these are:

Health service fees (p = 0,000): The cost of treatment is also a significant factor in the search for health services. People who are willing to pay for treatment are more likely to seek treatment at Penang-Malaysia Hospital.
Pain relief (P = 0.002): The availability of pain relief is also a significant factor in the search for health services. People who are seeking pain relief are more likely to seek treatment at Penang-Malaysia Hospital.
The category of disease (p = 0.015): The category of disease is also a significant factor in the search for health services. People who are seeking treatment for a specific disease are more likely to seek treatment at Penang-Malaysia Hospital.
Experience in getting health services (p = 0.003): The experience of getting health services is also a significant factor in the search for health services. People who have a positive experience with health services are more likely to seek treatment at Penang-Malaysia Hospital.

However, factors such as age, gender, marital status, type of disease, sources of information, advisors in the search for health services, and decision makers do not show a significant relationship with the pattern of searching for health services to the Penang-Malaysia Hospital.

Discussion

The results of this study suggest that the search for health services is influenced by various factors, including the perception of health facilities, nurse services, doctor services, administrative services, health service fees, pain relief, the category of disease, and experience in getting health services. The study also suggests that the desire of the community to look for hospitals abroad, such as in Penang, Malaysia, is a reflection of the limitations of domestic health services.

Conclusion

Based on the results of this study, it is recommended that hospital management in Indonesia, especially in the Province of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam, make improvements in health services both in government-owned hospitals and the private sector. Several steps that can be taken include:
