Introduction

Increasing food security is a major concern in development, considering that food is a basic need for every human being. Food security is defined as the availability of sufficient food and quality, distributed at affordable prices, and is safe for consumption by the community, thus supporting daily activities. This research focuses on Gajah Village, Simpang Empat District, Karo Regency, North Sumatra Province, which is specifically the location of the study due to the significant impact of the eruption of Mount Sinabung. The selection of Gajah Village as a place of research is not only based on the impact of eruption, but also because of its accessibility that makes it easy for researchers to collect data.

Methodology

In this study, the sampling technique used the Slovin method, with an analysis conducted quantitatively. Researchers analyze the proportion or percentage of household food expenditure and apply multiple linear regression analysis to determine the effect of various factors. The Slovin method is a random sampling technique used to select a sample from a population, where the sample size is determined by the population size and the desired level of precision. This method is suitable for this study as it allows for the selection of a representative sample from the population of households in Gajah Village.

Results

The results of this study showed that the majority of households in the village of Gajah after the eruption of Mount Sinabung were classified as food-prone households, where 64% of the sample showed a high percentage of food expenditure. This indicates that a significant proportion of households in the village are struggling to meet their food needs, and are therefore at risk of food insecurity.

Factors Affecting Household Expenditure

From the analysis conducted, there are several factors that have a significant influence on household expenditure. First, Household income proven to have a positive impact. This reflects that the higher the income received by the household, the greater the expenditure for food consumption. Enough income allows households to meet quality and varied food needs, which are certainly very important for health and prosperity.

Second, The number of household members also has a significant effect. Households with more members tend to require greater food expenditure to meet the needs of all family members. This condition shows that the demographic structure of a household is very influential on the pattern of consumption and food expenditure.

However, not all factors studied showed a significant effect. The level of education of housewives and duration of marriage or marriage age does not have a significant impact on food expenditure. This can be interpreted that although education and experience in households is important, these factors do not directly affect household capabilities in meeting post-disaster food expenditure. This situation reflects the complexity in the field, where economic factors are more dominant in determining the capacity of food expenditure.

Conclusion

From this analysis, it can be concluded that to increase food security in areas affected by disasters such as Gajah Village, focus needs to be given to increasing household income and managing a more effective number of family members. Economic empowerment efforts and increasing access to resources can be a key strategy for improving the state of household food. This study provides important insights for policy makers and stakeholders in an effort to increase post-disaster food security, as well as a reference for further research in the future.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

Increase household income: Efforts should be made to increase household income through various means, such as job creation, skill training, and access to credit facilities.
Manage household size: Households with more members should be encouraged to manage their size effectively, through means such as family planning and social support services.
Improve access to resources: Efforts should be made to improve access to resources, such as food, water, and healthcare, to support household food security.
Strengthen economic empowerment: Economic empowerment efforts should be strengthened to support household food security, through means such as skill training, access to credit facilities, and job creation.

Limitations

This study has several limitations, including:

Sampling method: The sampling method used in this study may not be representative of the entire population of households in Gajah Village.
Data collection: The data collected in this study may not be comprehensive, and may not capture all the factors that affect household food expenditure.
Analysis: The analysis conducted in this study may not be exhaustive, and may not capture all the relationships between the variables studied.
